For a couple of weeks Ubuntu was my primary/only OS at work. I've now got that machine setup as Win XP/Ubuntu dual boot. I found Ubuntu a pretty good OS to use, the biggest downfall was just the poor support for dual monitors. I wasted countless hours trying to get them working but never succeeded.

Ok, since I know you are good with Ubuntu, can you help me out? For some reason I lose my connection to the internet, but when I mouse over the bars it shows my wireless signal as 80% I can also use Pidgin, log on that. But when I try to connect to the internet using FireFox is says "Page cannot be displayed" How can I fix this? I can sometimes get it to work, but like if I am on google and click on the next button for a new search page, it goes to the "Page cannot be displayed" I am trying to update the OS, but since I cannot have a proper connection to the internet I can't update it. I can tell that FireFox is not 3 because the way it looks plus the options is not under tools where it is supposed to, but it is in edit.

I just downloaded this: http://wubi-installer.org/

edit:
Well I now have a Mac theme (almost)

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x20/magedesigns/misc/ubuntu_mac2.png

Its getting there, now all I have to do is install the fonts, icons, and the mac login/splash screen

{Grin}

Which I am trying to do that, but first I need to get these 130 updates for Linux done.

I have Ubuntu installed as a dual-boot on this laptop, and multiple monitors work fine. Which version of Ubuntu were you using at the time?

Oh yeah about multiple monitors, I have a 1995 and 1990 Monitors. Yes they are old {Tongue Out} I use them for Window 95 (Win95 is dead now {Unsure} ) and on Windows 3.1 (surprisingly it still works!) But all it does is come in fuzzy and you can hardly see the screen (1995), for the 1990, it shows up but it repeats like 7 lines of the same thing. How will I be able to fix this? (Have not done this on Ubuntu, it for some reason crashed, so I had to uninstall it and I am currently reinstalling it) but I have tried it on Vista, and thats my result {Unsure}

After reading this thread and speaking to a couple of others, i'm tempted to bung Ubuntu on my external HD. Assuming that's possible...

I'm using 8.10. I think the problem was to do with my graphics card being a radeon and as such having trouble getting the right driver for it. I could get cloned desktop to work easily but the only time I could get extended desktop working was by decreasing the resolution on each; they're both 19" which usually run at 1028x1024 but I had to run them at 1024x768 which was just too small and horrible to be any use.

It's possible. Go here http://wubi-installer.org

I did not have to reinstall or reformat. It installs like any windows program. Same with installing.

I have ubuntu dual-booting with Windows Vista Ultimate on my laptop {Tongue Out} . Desktop effects are fun {Cheesy}

Works pretty well especially since my laptop has 2 physical hard drives so I don't have to make it share with Windows. Yeah, dual-monitors took me a while to figure out, but in the end it was a matter of getting "nvidia-settings" or something like that and modifying it on there. Not sure what it is for other graphics cards though... but dual-monitors is still kinda buggy with ubuntu. Doesn't seem to be something they've gotten really stable yet....

I am trying to download an .iso so I can burn it to a CD, and see if I can put it on my windows 95. (My Windows 95 Crashed a loooong time ago) I am going to use the CD to wipe out the whole system. And put Ubuntu on it.

Good luck getting ubuntu off that computer {Tongue Out} i did the same thing and if i removed the ubuntu hdd to put in my third hdd in it raised hell. even when ubuntu was uninstalled it messed up my boot.ini file and i had to download some program(can't think of the name) and boot to it and redo my boot.ini file {Tongue Out} it wasn't easy. It's actually easier to put both OS's on one hdd.

Yeah why? {Tongue Out}

I absolutely love the Compiz Fusion {Grin}

Though would it be possible to put Ubuntu on an External HD?

I am going to be getting a 500 GB External HD for $99.88. Would it be possible?

I also can't wait to get it too. I can add more space to my internal HDD and have over 200 GB. Vista has an option to do that, it usually pop's up in the Auto Run when I insert my flash drive or MP3 player.

Well my setup was a lot more stable than my friend's dual-boot from one hard drive... he had to re-install several times, trying out different setups over the last year when I never needed to. Both OSs run very smoothly on my computer. Then again, it might just be the difference in computer manufacturer and model...

Hmm... well firstly, did you try googling that? I searched "boot ubuntu from external drive" and got some things that seem useful...
