Well I got into a torrent site, tried to download something, a virus called antivirusXP 2008 got in, and killed my computer within 15 minutes, I am doing the system reformatting thing with the disc's, ive tried 2 1/2 times now. (1/2 meaning im currently working on it now) and it keeps on saying error, after 35 minutes of waiting T_T. So I believe my laptop is junk now
Darkmage thats hitting everyone. It happened to me also. What you do is go to bestbuy and buy Spy Sweeper for 30 bucks. Download it and run it on the computer and your computer will run as good as it did when you first got it.
I don't have any money. Im currently on Toshiba Support forum, and PB support (another forum provider) and asking help:
This is what I get when I am half way through system recovery.
and THE BEAST told me to go here:
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080125135215AA qB67d
I accidentally got a virus its called antispyXP 2008. Well I tried to remove it with Norton/windows Defender/1-2-3 anti spy on (from my U3 flash drive) well after 15 minutes my whole computer crashed. So I insert the recovery disc and every time I get half way it says:
<ERROR>
An error has occurred.
ERROR : 10-FC10-0017
Recovery error.
please press ok to turn off the computer.
===============================================
and so I do, and then the system starts up then shows this:
BOOTMGR IS MISSING
PLEASE PRESS CTRL + ALT + DEL TO RESTART YOUR SYSTEM.
So now I am doing the startup repair and its taking a long time, and every time hit cancel it tells me that it can't.
Well I would of never had it if I hadnt gotten into a torrent site.
I don't personally use torrents, because they are a pain in the first place, and I'm too lazy when I don't get seeds or w/e to download from. But that just sucks =/
The latest thing with virus's that I keep getting is MSN Virus's all over again. Which would be a nice thing to put out to everyone.
If someone sends you a message that looks a lot like this:
"Hey! Check out this pic of you, you looks so ugly!" or "Hey, I just found a necklace check out the pic!" and is followed by a file don't accept it.
If you really do think it's your best bud sending you messages of real pictures, it most likely isn't. You better check with them by having them actually replying in some other way than MSN that it's them. I had a friend awhile back who had the problem, and he was able to talk at the same time and we luckily got it sorted out, but sometimes it's hard when it's someone you think you know well.
Darkmage, find that file bootmsgr.exe and delete it. Then Re-run the system recovery.
Don't re-run system recovery.
Reformat your entire system. That will take about 2 hours to reinstall windows and then probably a further 6 to install your programs.
One vital question, is XP the ONLY operating system that you've had on your computer? Or did you like 98 or 2000 before and installed XP over the top of it?
The virus called that erased my backups. I lost everything and had to reformat. I recommend mailing important documents to yourself or upload it for safekeeping.

I did try to reformat it. I got to the second disc and this shows up:
<ERROR>
An error has occurred.
ERROR : 10-FC10-0017
Recovery error.

And my moms desktop did not run any other version besides XP, and my laptop did not run any other OS besides Vista.

Everything is gone, I can't do a thing.
This is what Toshiba Support forum said:

With what are you attempting to format; your XP Setup CD, or using a command line boot disk?
Vista. Im trying to reformat my whole laptop.
XP has nothing to do with my laptop.
My bad, meant to say Vista setup CD.
I understand that you're trying to format the entire thing, but are you using the Operating System Setup CD that came with it (if it came with one), or are you using a command line boot disk? What exactly are you using to format?
The disc that that came with it, there was nothing else they came with it besides the 2 Toshiba Recovery disc's Disc 1 of 2 and disc 2 of 2.
Hmm, your best bet would be to find a boot disk, and then check online for instructions on how to format your drive using command line functions.

There is nothing I can do, I can't even get into the command prompt. so Im erasing everything, I clicked on the erase hard disk, then when that is done in 4 hours, then it will add the correct things in, and add the OS, because it said it could not find it.

Which is why I said look for a boot disk. Boot disks generally have command prompts built in to them, so that you can fix things from there.
I didnt get a boot disc? so how will I find one? unless I go to the store and buy it but like I said I have no money.
EDIT:
Oh I did find the command prompt earlier but there are no files. It just shows a blank screen and with no blinking cursor text thing.
Did you have a backup of your files? In my view just wiping the slate clean, as it were is the only thing to do as long as you've got any important files/music saved elsewhere. Losing the files is a massive pain - if i lost my music on it i'd be gutted
You could also use this opportunity to invest in a brand new, bigger hard drive
I have my 2 gigs of music, and a picture of the security numbers for my router. but thats all I have, I was going to make a backup awhile ago, but it kept on freezing on me. And I can't buy a new hard drive. I have no money.
?? what is Testing Ignore?
It can't find my operating system, How will I be able to get the OS in? The recovery disc's one work, they keep on saying ERROR every time it is almost done either deleting or reformatting.

Ouch The 2 gigs aren't too bad to replace as long as you have them all on disk The security numbers could be a pain though >.<
I have them all on my jump drive. so my music and security numbers are all safe.
Ok I found the command prompt, and this is what comes up
x:\sources\recovery\tools>
What am I supposed to with this?
Type in "format /?" and hit enter. A list of options will come up. I believe you'll have to enter something like "format C /V:DRIVE_LABEL /Q", but I'm not 100% sure. Enter "format /?" first to be sure.
that did not work. I am currently on the phone with Toshiba, and they said that my hard drive is damaged.
