Ask The Staff - Posted By Marc (cr0w) on 23rd Mar 08 at 7:54pm
This thread is for members to ask the staff any questions they would like, provided that it stays within the ToS. {Smile}

If a question is intended for a specific member of staff, please state so in your post. {Wink}

Re: Ask The Staff - Posted By Tim (grievous) on 23rd Mar 08 at 7:57pm
These questions are for Ross (or anyone that knows the answer {Tongue Out} ).

Is there a VF headquarters or is it just your house? also, are you the only Admin, or are there "behind The Scenes Admins?"

This is for all staff members.

How long have you been staff for VF?

How long have you been staff for VF?

I was modded on the 9th January. Ross made a GT thread saying he'd broken my profile {Tongue Out}

It came out of the blue - the thread cropped up and i noticed i had green stars, but didn't have any mod powers at the time, so i was a bit confused {Embarassed} A quick PM and i managed to work it out {Cheesy}

Re: Ask The Staff - Posted By Tim (grievous) on 23rd Mar 08 at 8:18pm
After this question i'll wait for the other staff to post there answers and wait for other members to ask.

Ross-Can you maybe upload the other premade skins to this forum, so we have more of a selection?

Re: Ask The Staff - Posted By tricky.cb (crazyblue) on 23rd Mar 08 at 8:40pm
@ DLG: The winner of the competition was the one who got his/her skin featured on the forum. It would defeat the purpose of having won the competition.

All the staff: Is Wrighty really a noob?

Re: Ask The Staff - Posted By Ross (admin) on 23rd Mar 08 at 9:14pm
Is there a VF headquarters or is it just your house?

Depend on what you mean by "HQ"? {Confused}

are you the only Admin, or are there "behind The Scenes Admins?"

I'm the only "admin" at this time. However other people have done behind the scenes work in terms of software development or other vF related issues.

Can you maybe upload the other premade skins to this forum, so we have more of a selection?

Eventually I might get around to adding one of the other skins on here to give more variety.

Is Wrighty really a noob?
Only sometimes {Tongue Out}

@ DLG: The winner of the competition was the one who got his/her skin featured on the forum. It would defeat the purpose of having won the competition.

The actual prizes were having your skin made a default skin avaliable for all forums to use. I only added slips on here as I wanted something more stylish than the old one {Grin}

How long have I been staff? I don't know the exact date; I didn't even notice I had been modded until I had been browsing the forum for about 10 minutes and noticed I had a "congrats" PM. {Tongue Out}

To answer the second and third question, we've pwnd him numerous times; I believe there is currently a supercomputer in a government building hidden underground at the moment which is struggling to keep up with it; it's expected to explode within the next two days. {Tongue Out}

As for how we pwn him; if we gave that away then everyone else would be pwning him too, and that we can't have. {Grin}

it's 'v'forums not, virtual forums! {Tongue Out}

Anyway, virtual as in 'not real' as you never get to download it I guess, something like that anyway. Ask Ross! {Tongue Out}

Well, I have two main stresses about being a mod.

For one, as Wrighty said, people asking to be staff. I get asked at least three times daily either "What are my chances of being staff?" or "Would you recommend me as staff?" {Unsure}

Tied for first with that is knowing what to do in certain situations. This is a support forum that sets an example for an entire service, and even the slightest mistake could negatively impact how all of vForums is viewed.

As for 2 & 3, not really. Would I still be active today had I never been promoted? Most likely, yes. Would I be as active? Probably not, but I would still be on every day. {Smile}

My favourite show changes, but it's mainly comedies like Family Guy, Scrubs, Teachers, Spaced, Green Wing, Red Dwarf etc.

As for the name, it was Ross that thought of it so only he can give the definitive answer {Tongue Out}

To all staff:Wats the most stressful part about being mod of a compny like this? Have you ever regretted being mod? If you could, would you go back as a member?

I think it's keeping a close eye on everything that goes on. We're fortunate that there's a strong mod team here and pretty much everything is discussed before a decision is made. As Marc said, it's the "spur of the moment" decision that are the hardest, and normally we poke each other via text or MSN etc to consult each other.

I've not once so far regretted being a mod - it's a wonderful opportunity to be a staff member at a fast growing forum service and while there are times you wish you could cut the reins and go nuts, we still manage to have fun and enjoy ourselves while getting the job done in a professional way.

I think giving that choice to individual admins is best. I know that a couple of formats don't get used much though so I'll either try to come up with some layouts which better incorporate them or scrap them altogether.

This question goes to Ross:Will you ever hire more Admins?

At some point in the future it may be necessary to have other people deal with either support, development or general administration duties. It won't necessarily be an existing member though depending on the requirements at the time.

Re: Ask The Staff - Posted By tricky.cb (crazyblue) on 26th Mar 08 at 10:57pm
DLG, someone has to be the least active =/ Plus they can't go in depth with support, coding, etc. which are all prime places for the other staff to post ( Except Graham, but he has the General board which is generally pretty active. )

To Slip: Your staff on pretty much every forum I've seen you on.. doesn't it get a little hectic trying to take care of them?

Re: Ask The Staff - Posted By Tim (grievous) on 26th Mar 08 at 11:15pm
No offense Anarch, but why are you answering my question? it was addressed to Slip and Blanka.

to Ross:Have you ever considered pulling a prank/joke on the members, such as changing your Admin color to blue to blend in, or to make 2 of the same board, or just some kind of prank/Joke?

Re: Ask The Staff - Posted By Graham (amusedtodeath) on 27th Mar 08 at 12:16am

Fortunately, the way us staff work is that we help out wherever is needed - yeah, we have our own particular places to mod but we'll all scan each area and add threads/posts/replies where needed. We've got each other's backs which i feel works well {Smile} If someone's a bit less active then we'll compensate to cover for them {Smile}

My feelings on having set versions is that they waste time. Provided the code is written in a sensible, efficient manner then there shouldn't be any need to rewrite it all at once. Instead I'm rewriting it in small sections which means you get the new features like in a new version but you don't get the long wait. The only time I can think there will be a need to do a version 2 would be if the core layout was majorly changed; but until all browsers start to agree on some standards that isn't really feasible.

I recall Ross saying that there will not be a 'complete rewrite' any time soon (probably for a very long while) as the system is built to use 'addons' which constitute new features.

Anyway, something like that! {Tongue Out}

No frankly it doesn't bother me at all that I don't have 2000 posts within a month of joining. {Smile} I can't be maximally active every forum I am on - it depends on the kind of responsibility I have. ProVision for example - I have to keep an eye on way more than I do here. And I'm ok with that.

As of now, the graphics area of this support board is not really the primary focus and isn't meant to be. Forum support and coding are. Consequently, staff members that are directly involved in that are more active.

Aside from that, yea I do plan on getting more active as soon as I can. This is just the beginning. VForums is gonna be getting really big really soon.

To Slip: Your staff on pretty much every forum I've seen you on.. doesn't it get a little hectic trying to take care of them?

Well I am on staff only at ProVision, SOS and here as of now {Tongue Out} but yea it does get hectic trying to juggle these and web design and my offline life {Smile}

Just to add to what's been said, all the staff do plenty of behind-the-scenes work. Almost every change, even small, is discussed by staff and everyone contributes to both brainstorming ideas for the situation as well as helping make the change happen; thousands of posts or not. {Smile}

You should make it templating tho *winks* and there were plans you even were gonna add the templating system for board mods! Sides IC, Mini Proifle and Main Profile are the sexiest to have templeting on, lots of advantages.

Should also add a hidden field for Only Profile page too..but i'll keep that for suggestions later {Tongue Out}

Ross: How do you go about making a Forum, And its Servers?

I know this was directed at Ross, but this is a pretty general question so I'll give it a go. Ross can still reply if he pleases. {Smile}

vForums is coded in PHP. First he coded a base which allowed for modules to easily be added on. From there he went ahead and did the posting systems, private messaging systems, etc. After he had it done for the most part, he opened it up and got to coding a few hundred suggestions into the software, which is an ongoing battle, so to speak. {Tongue Out}

As for the servers, vForums is hosted by Big Wet Fish. Currently it operates on two servers; one for mail functions, the other for the forums. {Smile}

I see. i totally don't and wouldn't understand if I were to maker one, But thanks {Smile} lol

Anyone that isn't an Adminstrator: Why do you think you were the "chosen" ones to be made Moderators, Or others? Was it because you were talented in something or another?

So anyone that isn't Ross? {Tongue Out}

I think it's because I was contributing quite well to the forum. I offered lots of coding support, and also regular support. As well as suggesting new things and reporting bugs. I guess my lack of talent as a coder got me somewhere.

But as all the other staff will say. I'm the n00b of the team. You gotsta have a n00b! {Tongue Out}

Fixed {Wink}

For that question Ryan, i think it was that we all contributed well to the areas that we're in "charge" of. However, as the staff are a cloesly knit group, we all compensate for each other: if one area needs help we'll deal with it rather than "leaving it to the relevent staff member". We cover each other {Smile}

Yes and no for both questions. In terms of the forum software itself I'm the only person who does work directly to it. Having said that, someone else is writing a new feature which we will implement into the software together. As for the server, most of that is handled by the hosting company.

If this forum ever got to the stage where either the member count or # of old topics were causing problems then old records could be removed. I don't see there ever being a real need for that though.

Re: Ask The Staff - Posted By ajay (ajay) on 2nd Apr 08 at 10:56pm

Depends. Is someone invisible when it displays: (Invisible) next to their name?

If so, yes. If not, yes! {Smile}

It is very smexi, we've all helped out with bits and bobs (mainly testing etc) and while it's been infuriating at times, it's soooooo fantastic {Cheesy}

API? {Tongue Out}

Well this one I think is nearly done. But you have to wait for Marcy to talk about that. As for the API - No idea.. I haven't been involved in the testing of that so I wouldn't know! :_)/

{Smile} awesome then i can stop wondering what the hell it is {Smile}

Re: Ask The Staff - Posted By Ross (admin) on 9th Apr 08 at 7:14pm
For the API, I've been testing it whilst using it to develop a new site at work. Off the top of my head, I think there's only one missing feature and one known bug. Once they're done and I've sorted out cross-domain logins (at least for users with their own domain name) and I've finished the documentation it'll be ready to go into full open Beta.
