Because it does. All part of it verifying that you are uploading a valid image. What is the problem with that?

Cool. Really I suppose it comes down to lazy coding forcing all JPEG images to use the same file extension

That's how mirrorimg.net is as well. It doesn't bother me, as long as it shows the images!
