Hi There. New to vForums (9th Jan 11 at 4:35am UTC)
Hi :) Some newbie question
Hi guys {Smile} You can call me Sharp. I'm new to vForums, and I'm loving the software. {Grin} I heard that vF can't afford to keep itself running anymore? Is this true? I really hope it is not {Sad}

I have a few other questions.

Are there currently any active graphics/coding forums on vF? {Smile} Anything that might be considered a legend? And if not legends, what would be the best on vF today?

Can you host your vForum yourself? {Smile} If not, how can you add a domain?

(Although I'm not planning to use this. If vF closes or something, is there a converter that can be used to save your forum? {Smile} )

Thank You {Wink}

A Amazed, Happy, & Hopeful Member,
Sharp

Hi,

Welcome to vForums {Smile}

vForums is backed by www.webskills.co.uk - an established company trading for nearly 15 years. There are no worries about us suddenly disappearing {Wink}

We do not have the option for you to host the forum yourself but we do have the ability for you to use your own domain name (or sub-domain) as your forum URL. eg. forum.topdeck.travel
Let me know if that's something you are interested in doing.

Thank You Ross {Smile} I knew some people were just jealous about this place. I'm sorry for asking a question based on wrong information {Smile}

I'm currently still planning my forum. I might need to make a new domain purchase, depending on my forum's name {Smile} Does godaddy's method of forwarding sub-domains work? {Smile} I understand cPanel also gives you the option. But I'm not so sure how this can be connected to my vForum.

Are there any active graphics and coding forums today, in vForums? {Smile}

So long as you can setup a CNAME record, you can use any registrar you want. I know GoDaddy gives you access to a full DNS editor so that should be fine (I'm not familiar with their sub-domain forwarding so cannot comment on if that would work or not)

Off the top of my head, http://tv.vforums.co.uk/

Ah Thank You Ross {Smile} I'll do some more research on that.

Russell has a forum here? That's great. Is there a forum with posts from January though? I did some searching in the directory, but didn't get any luck.

P.S: I hope you don't mind these questions. I'm quite new, and am thirsty to learn {Smile}

I used to have my own Design forum, but shut it down with lack of time for Graphics, I do my own graphics now. Or at least get some help. I am a member of TruVisions, and their work is excellent. Doesn't look like they are much active though. {Unsure} I know if you ask for graphics here, someone would be able to help out. {Smile}

If you have a cPanel already all you have to do is go to the Simple DNS Editor (I use that instead but the advanced one works as well.) What I do is for the CNAME Record is this:

Name: www.support (it will automatically add in your domain name)
CNAME: www.yourforum.vforums.co.uk

then I add in another CNAME record:

Name: support
CNAME: yourforum.vforums.co.uk

Then it will work just fine. {Smile}

I've never used GoDaddy's CNAME records, so not quite sure on that either.

Good luck with everything! {Smile}

There is nothing that needs to be done on vF's side?

Nope. All you have to do is pay for the forum which you can do so from here: http://shop.virtualforums.co.uk/ and I think you can use this voucher code: 33percent to get 33% off. {Smile}

It is! {Smile} I think what Ross explained to me was that because we pay for our domain name (and some of us for our servers) that the forum is a one-time fee. Or something like that. {Smile} I've had 1 forum since August I do believe and I have not paid for it again. {Smile}

Here, read this: http://support.virtualforums.co.uk/board/support/topic/31674/action/view_topic/pricing-for-ad-free At first I was a bit lost, and didn't know because it was my first time paying for a forum, and something online! {Lips Sealed} But with Ross's help I got through it, and been happy ever since. {Smile} Though on another forum service I tried this, only for ad free on a forum I always went to and lost $20. {Unsure} and it wouldn't be refunded, the ads were still there too. But I just bought my second forum domain not to long ago, and not a problem! Went through smoothly. {Smile}

Just to confirm, setup of using your own domain name is a one-off fee {Smile} (not a yearly one like with many other providers {Wink} )
