This gives us 3 options. Firstly, I could run a simple "Mark all as Read" on your inbox to remove this "1 new message" Secondly, if you don't mind linking me to the individual message, I could run full diagnostics on it to trace & fix the problem. Even though it's most likely that the same bug won't exist in the new system. Thirdly, I could run the upgrade procedure on your forum ahead of schedule. The downside of this option is that the documentation for the new system is not yet complete so it may confuse some members.
