Web host closing. (20th Sep 10 at 7:33am UTC)
A long time ago, Elixant was an awesome host. Had them for nearly two years. They closed.

I tried A Small Orange, hated their support. Went onto BigWetFish, and they started having some downtime issues on the server I was on so I moved to YuriHosting. I've been with YuriHosting for quite a while now and been very happy with them... they to me, beat Elixant.

Now today they announced their closure. {Sad}

I have two months to find a new host.

I'm sad.

GoDaddy. {Smile} I use it, just not hosting. I use OrangeServe.com for free/Unlimited hosting needs. {Smile}

They have Unlimited bandwidth
Unlimited Disk Space
Unlimited Emails
etc.

{Smile} and I love it, though they are fixing some server side issue's, but other than that it's very fast, and very powerful. Runs on linux Server, just not sure how fast the CPU is. But I can tell you it's quite fast. {Smile}

Though gets slow when People start to abuse the resources, and the server crashes. {Unsure} But it's still a very good Hosting Service. {Smile}

I used to be on Elixant too - seems like a long time ago {Sad}

From there I moved onto BigWetFish - and still have some websites hosted with them. This support forum included (for now). They do have some issues with their reliability/uptime (most shared hosts do) but I've stuck with them because of how good their support is. If I ever have any problems or unusual requests then I know they will understand what I'm asking and will go above & beyond their duty to help me sort it out.

Unfortunately nearly all my hosting nowadays is on Virtual Private Servers which I manage myself. I'm no longer really in touch with the shared hosting market so cannot really give any suggestions/recommendations {Unsure}

Nick, to be honest I wouldn't be planning on being with your current host for a long time; I've yet to see an "unlimited free host" not go under/start charging after a few months of being operational.

Personally, I've been all over the place with hosts. I was with WildWestHosting at first, and they were expensive, stingy, and their support was nothing more than a help desk without even so much as an email form. Following them, I switched to a company called AlphaRed; they specialized in VPS and dedicated server hosting, but had some really nice shared packages. I was with them for a while, until they went out of business after filing for bankruptcy. Following them, I switched to a host known as "UnlimitedMB" -- they had good plans at low pricing, but I soon found out why; they had horrible support, are dictatorial with their (illogical) restrictions, and all in all just weren't very professional.

Since then, I've been with "Valcato Hosting" -- I believe they're in the top 5 list on WebHostingJury as well as numerous other web hosting review sites. They have very well-priced plans, are very lenient with their restrictions, their server uptime/speed/etc. is phenomenal, and I've yet to see a host that cares more about its clients.

Take today, for instance; my site was loading fairly slowly, so I got in touch with their live support department. We discovered that it was an issue on my ISP's side, but rather than just saying "it's not our problem" and leaving it at that, they actually got in touch with my ISP to rectify the issue.

All in all, I've yet to have a bad experience with Valcato. {Smile}

Hmm. My last host was really great. Apparently they closed because the owners basically got better jobs. They were running it as a hobby. One of the owners IM'd me asking me to come over to their new company. Apparently he got hired by a bigger host and is now their technical support manager and manages the team of support/tech. o.o They gave me a realllly nice deal too. I think I'm going with them xD.

50% off when you pay for a 60 dollar a year plan?! Sure thing! xD They've been around since 1999 apparently. So I take it that's good? And they sat through with me over MSN discussing details.

The owner says he doesn't plan on changing or going under (Yes, I know plans can change. {Tongue Out} )

But I've been making back ups, every day, just in case they go under, and still have my old host open, just in case.

But It's been open for a month.
If this does happen, old members will still keep unlimited, but newer members will have to pay for unlimited, or get free limited. It's been talked with between the admins, and members on the support forum.

It's good that they have a plan, but the simple fact of the matter is that running a web host is expensive. {Tongue Out}

You need servers with great specs, you need people available 24/7 in case issues arise, you need to buy cooling units, make sure you have UPS systems setup, make redundant backups, get dedicated IP's from their service providers, and the list goes on and on -- keep in mind this list duplicates itself as the company grows and needs to purchase new and bigger equipment. At the end of the day there's no feasible way to run a free unlimited web host without losing money; even with paid plans available, the majority will opt for the free ones and chances are the paid ones won't cover the cost of everything. {Sad}

Personally, there's no such thing as 'unlimited' - every host will have a limit, they have to {Tongue Out}

I'm with Ross on BWF - i've still got a site with them and while they aren't the best for uptime the support is exceptional. Hostgator are pretty good too, so they'd be my second choice.

We use a small external host for our clients at work, which means we can get rapid support and good uptime...that's essential for our clients.

Well Yeah I know it's not unlimited, it's just unmetered, but I know the Server will have it's limits, that's why there are abusers, but they just implemented an auto-anti-abuse thing, where it will automatically shut down the site that's abusing. {Smile}

I switched from OrangeServe. {Tongue Out} They are now forcing stuff on us, and didn't ask what the community wanted, they had added ads, which I wouldn't mind, if it didn't cover up my whole banner and menu buttons. and didn't ask about people's settings/templates.

Anyone know of a good Free cPanel? (not Vista Panel)
