pmwwwgtalkvForum | New Laptop (29th Dec 08 at 8:42pm UTC) | | I've had my current Toshiba laptop now for 5 years or so and unfortunately it's starting to die. It's now having issues starting up (which takes ages), running multiple programs at the same time and it starts overheating quite quickly. So I've decided I'm going to treat myself to a new one.
Ideally I don't want to be spending over £400. I did manage to find one I liked the look of:
http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/510335/ACER-AS5735/tab/specification
But the size is a problem. I don't want to have to get a new laptop bag (I like my one) but it'll only hold a 15" screen (up to 35 cm or so). And it seems that is a hard size to get now. Hopefully I'll be going over to somewhere like PC world later this week where I can actually have a measure of a few and see what exactly will fit in the bag.
So does anyone have any recommendations on what I should be looking for. Any particular experiences with certain brands or models?

I use Novatech for all my PC needs, mainly as they're local but their support has always been top notch for me.
Here is a 15" laptop that comes in at under £400. Ideally it'd be good to know what sort of specs you are running at the mo and what you want but there we go

Bearing in mind that my current laptop is about 5 years old its current specs are nothing 256MB RAM, 40GB HDD and 1.5Ghz Celeron processor. I think I'm looking for something with at least a 2.0Ghz processor and 2-3GB of RAM. HDD isn't that important to me.
I doubt I would buy it from PC world, I'm thinking of more just going to have a look. When I decide what I want I expect I'll get it from whichever online shop does it the cheapest

I bought DVD + R cd's so I can back up all my stuff, I only need 1 DVD, 3.10GB the CD is 4.7GB so I have more then enough to backup my stuff. I got 15 DVD's for $5 at a dollar store.
I wanna get an Ext. HD 500GB but thats $99.99 so about $115.50 maybe a bit more.

I have the exact same thing. The Dell Inspiron 1525 is fantastic. I love it more than my MacBook actually.

My sister's boyfriend works for Sony and he's not all that taken with them - the battery life in them leaves a lot to be desired by all accounts. Plus as you said, you'd have to re-mortgage your house to buy one
