pmmsn | and you tell me to be a good driver (20th Mar 08 at 7:07pm UTC) | | SO, i'v had my permit for bout a month or so, but not driving in big traffic yet, but I am driving on side-streets and such. (pm me if your curious as to know why)
My dad has been bugging me about being a good driver and always telling me to be abservant, in which I'm actually a better driver than him. Anyway, sometimes when we pass certain places he'll look at watever catches his eye (Deer, rock in the road, ETC) well today as we were leaving the University Of Iowa Hospital and my dad started looking over at mc.donalds (which was on his left) and went through a red light, i yelled "RED LIGHT" and the dumba$$ freaked out and speed up when he could. Luckly, it was still a fresh red light, so no one had started moving.
If I was driving, I would'v had my eyes on the road.

It's all subjective though. Everyone thinks they're a good driver until something goes wrong

I'm not old enough to drive yet, but I do a bit of driving. I also have dirt bikes and atvs, so I'm pretty good at it. I'm pretty confident that I'll be good behind the wheel because I've had years of driving experience already, just on a different type of vehicle.

It's similar to what prompted me to watch my driving - a friend of mine, who i worked with was in an accident in June last year and is now paralysed from the waist down. His injuries meant he was actually very close to not making it It's surprising how the actions of someone can make you take a check on your own actions.

(no lie either) and that intersection is very bad, which is why i'm glad construction crews are there working.

I hate to say it, but it's kinda funny. you never care about your driving till an accident happens.

My sister wasn't injured, she was rear ended, but it did leave her rear bumper in a pretty bad condition.
That sucks for your friend. It's always horrible to hear about car accidents because people don't consider it anymore. Their too caught up with the chances they might be killed by a terrorist attack or murdered in their sleep to realize that they are driving these massive piles of steel at speeds that kill and aren't being cautious of their surroundings.

I agree. It's the same for my mate Lee - he was driving at 2am down a road that is notorious for accidents - the amount of closures on that road due to accidents is staggering How it happened no-one could ascertain, but it certainly got to a few people at work who have curbed their driving habits. It's a sad way for it to happen, but it's done a lot of good

Sorry, but I have to disagree. Saying that people are careless and don't pay attention until they get hurt is quite far from the truth. Most people care about how they drive, and take the time and effort to follow all the rules and be careful; it's the few that don't who tend to cause the accidents.

Heres an example that is kind of relative to it. When I jump on my dirt bike I don't think about hitting a fence or slipping and falling or any of that. I think about going as fast as possible and the most enjoyable ride. Most people these days aren't worrying about hitting someone, they are worried about getting from point a to point b in the quickest amount of time.

You won't make it to point B when you get hit and your on the pavement crying in pain, waiting.

People care more about getting to point B, then being careful on the road.

anyway.... you'll always find faults in other people's driving... especially when you're getting near to driving or are starting to drive.
and there's always gunna be something that'll wake you up to be more... careful... observant... etc..
like for me... my friend got hit by a drunk driver that made an illegal U turn back in september.
since then i don't suggest to people to make u turns where you're not allowed.. especially at night. i get more angry at the motorcyclists who ride between the cars on the freeway, when before i just kind of ignored them. and i refuse to be a passenger in a car that has a driver who's had anything to drink (no matter how small the amount) (and it's really hard to do that sometimes when my dad used to drink [heavily] and he was often supposed to be my ride home)
it's frightening to lose someone like that. it still hurts after over 6 months.
my message to all at this point: PLEASE don't drink and drive >_>
