pmwwwmsngtalk | | This isn't right. (14th Mar 08 at 1:55am UTC) | | Ok, I need some serious opinions here.
At my school we had this little project the weekend before Florida FCAT which is a big state exam. We weren't supposed to have homework in the first place anyways.. but thats not the point.
We've been copying these words down every day for awhile so everyone had the exact same definition unless they phrased it differently.
The project was we had to type all of the words and put them in alphabetical order. No problem, right? Well, big problem.
Tons of kids at my school just sent each other the words, which does it matter anyways if we all had them in the first place?
Now the teachers are pissed because it's considered 'cheating.' When we all started with the same thing in the first place. So they've given a majority of the kids that they have zeroes on the project and there is absolutely no way to make it up because the grading period just ended.
So all day today after one of the exams people were cowering in fear as the 2 teachers went room to room pulling the kids out of class and telling them the news and not only that but their parents would be called.

How do they know for sure which students copied, anyway?

I had one friend who copied another but just changed the date on which he said he did it. Another who just printed an exact copy.
But mainly if it looks alike 100% I guess.

Still sounds a bit over-the-top too me.

The 2 of them were pulling kids out of classes and according to one of my friends who had to listen to what they said they yelled at them. It wouldn't be bad if they had explained it, yeah it's still over the top and wrong, but it wouldn't of been as fearful.
One of my friends who had been caught came back into the class completely red faced and pissed off. She put him up to be embarrassed in front of people who knew which is just wrong. If she wants to tell that he is now going to fail that class pretty much she should of whispered it instead of announcing it to the class.

Honestly, you should fight it. Go to the principals office, and tell him how you feel about it. As youth in a democratic nation, you and your classmates have a decent amount of power.

Funny one, took me all of grade 9 and a bit of grade 10 before the school started listening to what I had to say.

@ Virtuoso: That's one of the big problems. Many kids were sick, since it's winter and all so they missed words. They had to get the words from friends and what not.
I'd fight it but it's not worth it in my school. You have to be a prep or 'popular' at my school for the faculty to even care you exist.

I.e. finding the closest free public advertising area near your school, and spam it with posters about how corrupt the school is. Start an unofficial newspaper legally speaking out against the school. It's definitely possible.

Or start a riot; I know in Canada one of the Human Rights laws is a right to peaceful protest.
