pm | | Debate: The Patriot Act (4th Mar 08 at 11:57pm UTC) | | Quote: The USA PATRIOT Act, commonly known as the "Patriot" Act, is an Act of Congress that President George W. Bush signed into law on October 26, 2001. The acronym stands for: Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001 (Public Law Pub.L. 107-56).
The Act expanded the authority of U.S. law enforcement agencies for the stated purpose of fighting terrorism in the United States and abroad. Among its provisions, the Act increased the ability of law enforcement agencies to search telephone and e-mail communications and medical, financial and other records; eased restrictions on foreign intelligence gathering within the United States; expanded the Secretary of the Treasury’s authority to regulate financial transactions, particularly those involving foreign individuals and entities; and enhanced the discretion of law enforcement and immigration authorities in detaining and deporting immigrants suspected of terrorism-related acts. The act also expanded the definition of terrorism to include "domestic terrorism," thus enlarging the number of activities to which the Patriot Act’s expanded law enforcement powers can be applied.
From Wikipedia. What is your stance on the patriot act? Should it have been implemented? Do you think it was necessary? Or do you believe it is taking a primitive stance like that taken during WWII against the Japanese and German citizens of America?

If someone is a terrorist they aren't going to be broadcasting it over the phone. They will have meetings in secret that the U.S. Government wont probably ever know about.
I think it violates freedom. I don't feel free when I know that the government is listening to every word I say over the phone, that is just not right. I tell things to my friends over the phone because I thought it was private, there were no saved files that a hacker could get to steal those words or what ever but now there is some U.S. Government agent listening to me tell my friend something that I'd rather they didn't hear? I'd rather live in Canada.

Back on topic, I agree with you entirely. What right does the government have to sacrifice our civil liberties for a supposed terrorist threat, without our consent?

I guess it's just so common to break the constitution and the bill of rights lately they don't seem to notice that our democracy is slowly becoming more towards a dictatorship.
I just can't believe they would even think of doing something like this though. They want to violate privacy in every way because.. terrorists? If there are terrorists in the U.S. I'm pretty sure they wont be people that have lived in the U.S. for their whole lives.
Then, whats stoping those people from using their phones in their countries to have their nice little chats about terrorism? It's not solving anything by listening to the phone lines of average U.S. citizens. Terrorists wont even bother to touch a phone now, they aren't retarded if they wanted to do something they probably wouldn't grab a phone and try and discuss it over that when they too know that the government is invading their privacy.
This is really just a load of crap.

I understand that you may have strong feelings toward this subject, but the word "retarded" is offensive to many people; please refrain from using it in such context in the future.

That's the context I was referring to.
I know that it's become a somewhat popular habit in today's society for it to mean stupid, but it is derogatory to those who actually suffer from a mental disability.
Anyway, thanks for understanding.
