Password Protection for Boards (13th Oct 08 at 12:21pm UTC)
A new feature installed on all forums
Hi,

I know some of you will be very happy to hear that we've added a new feature to all forums this morning. You can now give each board a password. Users will only be able to view that board or posts made in it if they first enter the password. This works in addition to all the existing methods of giving access to member groups/ranks.

To set it up, simply go into "Modify Board" in the admin panel, select the board and enter the password into the "Board Password" field.

An example board of how this will function has been setup here: http://support.virtualforums.co.uk/board/tests
Try going into the second sub-board (example board)

What would this do? I am no good with passwords, as well FireFox does save it but since it wont save the password correctly I have to enter a password every time. (The other provider I was on did this) I will have to try this out.

But what good will the giving access to member groups/ranks?

The password feature I never even used before I switched to vF, and I know most likely I will never use it here.

What are the advantages and the disadvantages?

Nothing has changed in that respect. I was just saying that it works alongside the existing board/category permissions.

Nobody is forcing you to use it if you don't want to, it's just another option available to those who want/need it.

I know, I am just wandering what the use is for.

This is a very handy system, I was looking to use it during a clan discussion board on AV when it was around.

Darkmage, it's very handy for several reasons, say you have all these people at the same rank but you still will only allow some of them access to the board and creating a new user group will just make your forum look wrong, then you stick a PW on it making it so much easier!

It means that you don't have to hide boards and stuff like that (which is a pain in the ass!) instead you can just PW it all.

Ahh I see, I run a Clan forum too, but I only allow the Specific Clan to enter in their own board. I have no reason to password it. Like for my forum its a Halo PC forum, My forum is Clan Assassins, There is a board specifically only for Clan Assassins.

I guess it is alright for the people who actually have use for it. I know "Another provider" uses it like for some RP forums, the only "Other provider" forum I ever go to is Final Fantasy. They use a PW protected board only for the reason to make people search for the password in the rules, FAQ, etc so they can enter it in the protected board, where its for Character Sign-ups.
