server down? - Posted By ashkir (ashkir) on 31st Mar 10 at 1:51am
As of late it has been feeling the main server hasn't been connecting a lot or really slow. =/

I don't notice a thing, might be your connection?

Re: server down? - Posted By ashkir (ashkir) on 31st Mar 10 at 5:06am
No. My connection is fine. I have fiber obtic connections. I can connect everywhere fine except for the forums on the main vforums forum server in the afternoons.

Just because you have a fiber optic connection it doesn't mean that the problem isn't your connection {Wink} There's nothing to say that the problem doesn't lie with your ISP or somewhere along route from your ISP to our DC provider.

There's two things you can do to help identify the source of the problem:

1. Run a trace route to the forum URL you are having trouble accessing. Let us know the results.
Do this by going to "Start" -> "Run". Type "cmd" and press enter. In the window which opens type "tracert forum.vforums.co.uk". When it completes right click, choose "Select All" and then press the enter key to copy the results.

2. If you have Google Chrome use the "Resource Tracking" feature to identify which files have the longest latency/load time.
Access this information by right clicking in the window, choosing "Inspect Element" and then on the window which opens choose the "Resources" tab.

If we can identify where the problem lies then there may be things we can do to help solve it.

It's only the forums that take a while to access. Everything else is perfectly fine including the support forums. It's just when trying to access my forum.

Seems like quite a lot of slow hops to get to the server.

I'm going to update some of the core services on the server over the next 20-30 minutes. This will require them (and maybe the whole server) to be restarted. Shouldn't cause more than a couple of minutes downtime in total. I'll try to keep this post updated.

We'll have to see if there's any improvement after that. Would be interested in seeing if there's any patterns with those seeing slow connections {Unsure}

Update: 30 minutes in now. Might be a little longer. I did the big updates (mainly mysql) first which seems to have gone fine. Am just waiting for all the others to finish. Once they've finished I just need to give apache a restart and we'll see where we are.

One thought I did have is have you tried loading up any forums which don't use the vforums.co.uk domain, either one using vforums.us or a custom domain?

If not, I've got an example of each, would be great if you could let me know how these load (in relation to yours - providing the server updates haven't substantially improved things)

Update2: All updated. Took a while to get apache to restart but it all seems good now {Smile}

Using one of my forums as an example?

I just chose the first forum I found using vforums.us which didn't have too many images (since they could affect the load speed) {Smile}
