We are the masters of fine art. (1st Aug 08 at 1:08am UTC)
Classical Times, a classical arts community
Image
We are the original. We are one of the few. We are dedicated to the classics.

Classical Times is a community devoted to the classical arts. We wish to inform the world that there are people whom love the classics, and that the classics are indeed a great part of life for humankind. With an unique topic, we are willing to help one succeed in the exploration through the love of the world of classics.

Please, no rates on post counts, I don't want the standard "put more threads" etc links. I mainly want opinions on the idea, concept, layout, and the template of the forum. In consideration to people whom may like to see what it looks like when viewing a post page, we have one board open for guests, click here. (Please do not spam the questions board, thanks {Smile} )

I present to you, Classical Times:

http://classics.vforums.co.uk
http://classics.virtualforums.co.uk

Also adfree to all members. :].

It's not bad but why would pay money to get ad-free when you don't even have members yet? =P Great layout forum and with a decent design. Just don't know if there enough people interested about the subject to make the forum active.

It's a great idea, though the board is reasonably flawed.

I use FF (firefox) and everytime I scroll, the background goes completely white, it's like it has to reload or something ridiculous like that!

Looking at it though, the colour idea is fine, however, the shade of the boards is too dark in my opinion, ruining the flow of the overall layout. Some of the colouring of the admins is a bit weird, some too bright, some not bright enough etc, etc. It just needs a bit more though.

I do agree with blanka... why pay for add - free without members?

I don't like the title of it, it's too long. It seems like a funny thing to point out - but with not much else to comment on may as well get to the specifics.

If this place picks up, which I'm sure it will as it's an arts community (I'm an arts student lol, though, more post - modern than classical) this could easily make it to vforums homepage.

I like it, and Sven I do not see what you mean of the white part in the wallpaper, I use FF as well.

I like the general layout. The banner, wallpaper, boards etc are alright. But what bugs me is that you have allot of boards which is fine, but allot of boards with no threads in them = bad and a turn around. Simply what im saying is Its good you have allot of boards, but bad that the boards are empty. It shows the lack of activity. I also agree about ad free with no members, disable the ad free until you get at least 10-20 active members. Then re - enable it.

EDIT:

There is another thing I suggest is get a cell highlight for the board.

Code:

  1. <script type="text/javascript"><!--
  2. // Cell Highlight
  3.
  4. var newColor = "Color";
  5.
  6. var td = document.getElementsByTagName("td");
  7. for(x=0,y=td.length; x<y; x++){
  8.     if(td[x].width == "69%"){
  9.         td[x].onmouseover = function(){
  10.             this.style.backgroundColor = "#" + newColor;
  11.             this.style.cursor = "pointer";
  12.         }
  13.         td[x].onclick = function(){
  14.             location.href = this.getElementsByTagName("a")[0].href;
  15.         }
  16.         td[x].onmouseout = function(){
  17.             this.style.backgroundColor = this.bgColor;
  18.         }
  19.     }
  20. }
  21. //--></script>

What this will do is in the var newColor = "Color"; You put in a color (I suggest the color of the category bars) and when you put your cursor over the board it will change to that color you specifically added.

I think that it would look great.

I don’t care about post counts honestly. It’s new, starting out, heh, it may never kick off. The adfree is just a preference for myself when starting off a new board. I originally bought the credits just to test and support Virtual Forums, so I might as well use them. I have nothing to worry about I have plenty of credits to use toward ad free.

.System there are a few codes in the database that modifies the login box, I used the vB style. Blanka, I paid that money long ago. xD. Just had the ad free credits collecting dust. Sven as Darkmage said, I use FireFox and get no errors. The only browser I didn’t test was Internet Explorer, because frankly, IE even says Google has a scripting error in the email now. =/.

The title is the title, the actual title and the slogan. From sources and articles I read it is an ideal idea for SEO. Places always have a few word slogans, but ours is just a bit longer.

I thought carefully about my layout of boards and am pretty happy about it. Four boards displayed on the main page per category. I don’t really care about the inactivity, it is just an idea I wanted to try and please myself about. Darkmage, you reminded me one thing I forgot. I actually have a cellhighlight color saved in my notes, just didn’t find a code to do it. For some reason I thought vF had it build in. :[. I’ll get to that soon. :].

I’m open to future ideas. Please nothing about the inactivity or adfree. I mainly care on the reception of the content, etc. Feel free to poke at some of the topics I'm trying to start.

well... the content is the topics, it should kick off if you advertise it to the right group, such as the 'older' people. or the younger people who are interested in that.

I do wish the Cell highlight was a feature, but suggestion are closed for now {Cry} so I or we can't do nothing about it.

Finding the right group is the hard part. xD. I been trying to find a focused community like this since 2006 still no luck. :[. Classics is dead to many.

Cellhighlight added.

One thing wrong is I do see is this. What are those lines? then a few seconds they disappear.

I took another look at your forum, I do find another thing that is bothering me, it is the wallpaper. instead of having it on repeat have it Background Image Position: centered, Repeat Image: No Repeating, and Fixed Background Image: checked. Then it would look a bit better.

Im not sure if those lines are the cause of the repeating background, but you should look into getting that fixed.

Those are a browser glitch. The background I'm using is not permanent, but I think it is your graphics card trying to render each pixel when it is just a repeating. I don't get the issue here, Also, if you do look at the background image it is on repeat for one reason, it's only like fifty pixels high. (background link).

I just tested my other PC didn't get the error in Opera and IE, only FF. =/.

Edit: See the abstract of the banner? I had this banner for a while made by a friend, Patrick, he also made a background to match it. I lost the background image sadly. :[. My webhost like disappeared while I was in the hospital and I only had a few days to backup files. Webarchive sucks at CSS file saving for backgrounds. :[. Patrick made this back in 2006 (yes, seriously I had it that long), he thinks he may still have a copy, and hopefully he does. :] The background matches the banner perfectly.

My graphics card is ATI Radeon Graphics, I think it is the highest standard graphics card. I have my graphics control high with no anti aliasing and slick clear screen. (I guess its like HD) I tested your forum in IE, FF, Opera, and Safari, it all looks good. But Safari is the best out of all of them, there are no lines at all when scrolling nor when loading.

but IE, Opera, and FF showed the lines.

Those lines are the reloading thingo I was talking about... I just scroll really fast so that they kindda bug up and cause the whole background to reload...

and ATI does have its own set of problems {Tongue Out} Not that my nVidia geForce doesn't either lol.

As Darkmage said, part of opening the forum is having the topics started. I think, from reading your posts that you are finished with it at the moment? That's a bad look for the forum, you want to have your topics started. I thought you merely wanted an idea of the skin before continuing with it.

Your do definitely need to make starting topics or it WONT kick off, end of story..

As I thought I said I don't care about inactivity, mainly the concept. I noted the background image, and will get this fixed to please a wider resolution. Patrick Riley Orr made a background for the theme a while ago, we're trying to find it again. If not I'll get another one done that is similar. I promise it won't have this 'bug' some people are talking about.

Right now, we are not advertising just yet. As you guys might see Ellie is listed as an administrator now, she is like one of my best friends and is a director from Tehran. We're not going to all be American or British, we're focusing on other parts of the world. A majority of our first members will be from the Middle East.

I've seen this skin before, though I can't remember where. It had a more matching background, too. I really like the skin. Its very sleek and complements the theme very well.

I like the subject matter. Its definitely hard to advertise though, as already mentioned. Perhaps you can start by advertising topics of your forum that deal with remade works. For instance, you have film on there. You can discuss movies like the remade Ocean's 11. For the reason category, I think you should cut that down to 2 boards by combining the philosophy and theology, and combining the debates and questions boards. Otherwise, it still seems like you have too many boards. There are ways you can cut it down, like combining dance, opera, and music. And combine drama and film into theater arts or something.

6/10. I really think you should try to bring this board back. Its good to keep the classics alive.
