Slicing (6th Nov 08 at 4:40pm UTC)
Now, i've got a concept for a design finally sorted, and i'm considering giving this a go at coding myself- my coding skills aren't great but i want to learn to do it all myself properly.

Now, how easy is it to 'slice' (or whatever term one uses) the concept ready for coding? If someone can explain it, or give links to handy tutorials then i'd much appreciate it {Smile}

Re: Slicing (6th Nov 08 at 9:27pm UTC)
A large part of my job involves me being handed a design (usually a complete design of each level of a website which the customer would have approved). From there I have to work out how each element or aspect could be coded. Doing this I would look at what backgrounds are used (and where), what aspects of the design are repeated and I'd take into account any special functionality it's supposed to have. From that I tend to draw myself up a plan (in my head) of roughly how I would cut different aspects up. Once I've got this rough idea of how I'm going to do it, I'll throw myself in at the deep end and start coding. Usually doing the global aspects first (header, navigation, footer, background). I find that I find it easier to work out how some of the lower down aspects should be sliced once I've already built the framework of the site itself.

Unfortunately I know that isn't all that helpful. I've never used a real tutorial to tell me how it should be done, all I know is that the way I do it works for me. I might have looked at a few tutorials in my early days to learn how to insert slices and export them in different formats but most has been through trial and error. But then I started this from the completely opposite end, being a coder before I started developing full websites.

If you want to post some concept I could (try) to explain how I'd slice it and why.
