School Violence (17th Feb 08 at 8:15pm UTC)
I know that I posted a thread about the Illinois school shooting, but that was a very extreme case. This one is a little different.

How does violence affect your school? What sorts of things happen regularly? What sorts of things happen every once and a while? Should some rules be changed? Should new rules be put in place?

At my school, we can expect about a dozen fights per school year, as well as a few weapon-related fights.

Last year, there were quite a few fist-fights, some one-punch fights, 2 stabbings, one guy getting his face slashed with an exacto knife, another guy getting his face stomped on while down, and a few other small fights.

This year, there have been a few fights; yet to see a weapon-related fight/injury, though. I was in the first fight of the year; someone attacked me from behind over a girl I was dating, so I smashed him off a locker in self defence. A few other fights happened with some seniors, but no serious injuries. A close friend of mine was getting stalked by someone over his girlfriend, and got attacked in the basement during class when no one was around.

Our school has no metal detectors, we don't get searched on our way in/out, the school lets students carry Swiss Army knives, don't check student cards upon entry to the school, no one watches the security cameras during the day, half the halls don't have cameras, etc.

I think most of the rules that are in place are fine, except for a few. What I think needs to be changed is that our student cards need to get metallic strips on the back that we have to slide through a reader to unlock the doors, and we need to get a door that leads directly into the office from outside for those without student cards [whether it be a parent, a student registering with the school, an old student coming to visit, etc.]

Just by putting those two new rules into effect, none of the weapon-related fights would have occurred, as those were not committed by students of the school. As for the other fights, schools in this region have a "No Tolerance" policy in effect; if you start a fight, you're expelled.

One thing that needs to be changed though is consequences for fighting back. If I hadn't ended the fight right after smashing him off the locker, I would have received a one-month suspension. This is seriously a messed up rule; do they expect us to just sit there and get beat to near death until a teacher or other student comes by? [That is, if a teacher or student comes by... {Unsure} ]

In our school, they tightened the security allot more, because of that Gang shooting, we are now getting metal detectors. and If you are caught using jesters of gang signs, shakes etc, getting into fights, you get in trouble, and if you are caught out in the hallway with no hall pass, you get a $150+ Truancy ticket. We had allot of fights last year, and the year before, mainly about girl to girl, guy to guy, guys fighting over girls, girls fighting over guys, gang rivalry etc. So now you get In school suspension or Out of school suspension, but see kids now a days like to get suspended or expelled, kids don't want to go to school, they rather be out in society causing trouble, or at home sleeping, playing games. Thats why we had a shooting, the two kids got caught having drugs on school premises, so they got expelled, and look what happened one in prison, and one dead. {Unsure}
We also get checked if we come back in after lunch, I don't have to worry about it because I eat school lunch. But we are supposed to have backpack checks each morning but never do.

$150 fine? That's quite extreme if you ask me. {Unsure}

Our school never enforces hall pass rules, so if we're seen without one the hall monitors don't care. {Smile}

Well it is only because of that shooting we had a few weeks ago, go into the school shooting thread, and look at our newspaper.

This is about the gang symbols/shakes:

and being in gangs:

but the stricter hall passes hasnt been in the news yet.

Over the years, my school really isn't too bad for violence. Every now and then there'll be a little fist fight of some sort or sometime. Nothing major. Lol, anyone can basically walk right up into our school. They have very lousy protection. {Tongue Out}

Thats the nice thing about living in a small community. Its all around friendlier. No gangs, not a loaded school, not too much traffic and pollution.

Referring back to school, everyone gets along for the most part from what I can see. I really don't talk to my real life friends all that much. Most of my friends are spread throughout the interent. {Tongue Out}
