pmwww | | Writing Songs (10th Jan 08 at 2:09am UTC) | | For those of you who write lyrics, what do you find easiest to do that gets you inspired?
What I usually do is just take a situation from my own life, write it out as a story, take key points, make some important phrases that will go into the song, then add on from there.

I know what you mean; when I write songs, it tends to be about heartbreak. It just seems to be the only thing that truly inspires me, since I can relate so well.
There was only once that I managed to get a good start on a love song that didn't involve heartbreak, but then something happened and I ended up ripping up the song.

pmskypemsnyahoo | | Re: Writing Songs (10th Jan 08 at 3:56pm UTC) | | Oh what a great question. How to write a song? Reading what you posted, what gets us inspired is a good idea to try things out. But I find the best way to get inspired is by not trying to get inspired. If you are willed to right a song it'll come to you. I get inspired at the oddest of things. Seeing someone, reading something, hearing a name, etc.
But I can say one thing, if you get a tune in your head, WRITE IT DOWN, you will so regret it later if you didn't as you'd probably forget and think "Damn that was a good thing I had in my mind, how did it go again?" I suggest keeping a notepad and pen nearby at all times and be ready to write.
Also write from the heart. Don't write to fit theme, concept, lyrics, or rhymes. You don't want your writing to be forced, as readers/listeners usually can tell (especially if they have a background in critique of simple things).
Best of luck. | |

1) Get a mallet 2) Say 'hi' to Bob 3) Hit yourself aside the head until you forget writers block. 4) Get notepad and writing untensial, keep near you at all times! 5) Write from the heart when a tune pops in your head (never know where you may think of a good song/poem/tune in your head) 6) Save the paper/tune you wrote put away. 7) Go back to the tune, look at it, think of it, rewrite and make changes how you feel. 8) There you go. 9) ?? 10) profit!

I can't think of any good songs that have been written under the influence of narcotics. A lot of my friends who are in bands say that it's a pointless thing to do as it won't convey the proper emotions that being "clean" will.
Anyway, back on topic. These are some lyrics that i've been ingesting for some time - it's Stupidity Tries by Elliott Smith:
Got a foot in the door God knows what for And it'll cut me down to size Stupidity tries Everything here is free Everything but you and me This painting never dries Stupidity tries Savannah shoulder Raised a cheer Coloring the sky with ash Because they found some privateer To sail across the sea of trash The enemy is within Don't confuse me with him The truth is otherwise Stupidity tries And so I go from floor to floor Looking for a port of call Another drunk conquistador Conquering the governor's ball I couldn't think of a thing That I hope tomorrow brings Oh, what a surprise Stupidity tries
