pmwww | Laptops vs. Desktops (14th Apr 09 at 12:27am UTC) | | As has been pretty obvious over the past few months, my activity has dropped quite a bit. The reason for this has been lack of a computer to use. I currently own 3 laptops. One has a burnt-out PSU ($130 replacement -- just for a new PSU, no labour costs since I'd just solder it myself), one has a broken IDE, and the other's Motherboard is part of a recall and had to be shipped out for repairs. Now, I have come to realize that desktops are much more reliable than laptops, for the simple reason that they last longer. You can use a desktop for hours a day for decades, and (assuming you don't get viruses and such) the only thing that will change is that it will slow down. Laptops, on the other hand, break much easier when used as a main computer. For this reason I've decided that my next computer will be a desktop. I'll still need to take my laptop to school every day (seeing as all of my courses next year will be computer-related), but at home I'll be using my desktop 95% of the time. Personally I don't favour one over the other, since they're both great for different things, but I've decided to no longer use my laptop as my primary computer. Now, this decision comes from approximately 5 years of desktop use followed by approximately 5 years of laptop use. What about you? Which do you prefer and why? P.S. I'm on my dad's computer at the moment; it'll still be about another week before I get my laptop back.

I want my Desktop to be Vista Business, my laptop is already a Home Premium, and I want another laptop for Ubuntu. But I can't afford any new computer at the moment. I wont be seeing my laptop until Wednesday or Friday

pmwwwyahoo | Re: Laptops vs. Desktops (14th Apr 09 at 3:34pm UTC) | | I have both I use a lap top for work with a second monitor and than at home i have a desktop with duel monitors, during the week my laptop normally stays docked and I don't even take it home. On weekend's it not surprising to see me with my laptop opened up next to my desktop monitors using both. The real key thing for me is that I hate that my monitors are different sizes. My laptop has a 15" screen and all my LCD's are 19, But like you mentioned my desktop has been solid, but it is getting slower now that it is 3 years old now and my laptop is beefier. After all the rambling I prefer a desktop for home and a laptop for travel. On a side not my wife uses a Laptop with a 17" screen and it never leaves her desk, she likes the fact she can take it with her with out worrying about where here data is when she visits her folks.

pmwww | Re: Laptops vs. Desktops (14th Apr 09 at 5:09pm UTC) | | I tend to prefer desktops - i use them at home and at work but i'm investing in a laptop in the next week or so - spending time around my girlfriend's house, or even helping with presentations to clients at work means that having a laptop will help me a lot. It won't replace my desktop as i'm very fond of it but no-one can deny that it is a lot easier to have for those circumstances
