Hurricane Fay (18th Aug 08 at 8:48am)
RUN TOOOO THE HILLLLLSSSSS!
Well.. me living in Florida, hurricanes are a threat.

Although we haven't had a hurricane for like 3-4 years come anywhere near us, this one is supposed to hit my area.. in the face.

I wasn't born in Florida, so a big hurricane is actually a first. I've lived in Florida for 6 years as of either June or July, and only had a few hurricanes, and none of them hit directly.

It's always quite exciting when a hurricane comes since everything is all dark, rainy, and loud Smiley But what I find most fun about it is the timing of it. The majority of my old friends start school tomorrow ( I went to a different school ) and the hurricane is supposed to hit Tuesday, so it will be a fun second day of school Smiley

And now for the discussion bit.. have any of you been in a natural disaster? I personally haven't been in much. I've seen tornado funnels, and hurricanes, but that's about it.

Earthquake for me. THough, I live in australia which aside from Droughts natural disasters don't really occur.

Droughts ARE scary. Water restrictions eat faces really. Especially since I live in Rural Australia it hits hard.

Highest I've ever seen it go to though is Level 3... though I went to visit my grandparents who live about 2 hours away. They had level 5 water resitrictions.

To give you an idea basically at level 5. You use 100L a day for your entire family. Thats bathing, drinking, washing... the lot.

Swimming pools aren't allowed to be refilled, water fountains are off. Watering plants off limits, washing cars off limits, sprinkler systems are out.

No cleanign the house, and in some extreme cases Grey Water usage only. (like 2nd grade water). In some places in the harder parts of Australia, they were going to install the first sewerage treatment plant that allowed for drinking water (I think we are the only country that doesn't have this in some way shape or form. Ironic as we are the 2nd driest continent).

None, although a city above us was hit hard with a Tornado. It was about 5 or 6 miles away from us. We just got hit with the rain is all. But the Hurricane in Florida is just going to be a tropical storm. Majority of my family lives down by Ocala, FT. lauderdale area, and they said its not going to be a Hurricane its only going to hit the Islands south of Florida.

We don't get any real droughts in Florida. Just the occasional week periods of no rain. Although I think my science teacher said that we have been considered to be in a drought for a very long time or some random crap, but I don't believe half the stuff he said cause he lied a lot.

@ Darkmage: It's only a tropical storm at the moment. There is the possibility it will get stronger. Also it's not stopping.. it wont stop for awhile either Smiley It's just in the Keys right now.

Here is a tracking map that estimates that it will get up to category 1:

We get many funnel clouds here, the odd weak tornado maybe once or twice a year. Nothing serious since I live in a hilly area and tornadoes don't do too well with hills.

We do get thunderstorms so bad though that the houses shakes from the thunder; does that count? Smiley

My boyfriend is in Florida, visiting his family. He's sitting *right* next to the eye of it.

He was telling me about how he's been through four, and played basketball outside during one. And silly people told him it was "unsafe" and to go back inside.

Silly people.

Re: Hurricane Fay (20th Aug 08 at 12:25am)
This is just getting quite lame Smiley The storm is no longer going to be a hurricane, and it's slowed down a lot. It's about 100 or so miles away from my area. I've heard though that it's going to take a U-Turn, and the path's are showing it turning quite quickly. So far I've had a bit of rain, pretty lame Smiley

EDIT: Well it seems that I've got a bit more info on this storm Smiley The storm is going to follow a track and end up in the Atlantic where it will supposedly regain power. It will come up to category 1 and boomerang back through Florida. Woot Smiley

Tricky, I understand that it would be exciting, but you've also got to think of all the damage, possible deaths, and people's lives ruined because of possessions and homes being destroyed. Apart from the rush of excitement, I can't see anything good about a hurricane.

We live in rural Australia as well, but the drought hasn't really affected us 'cause we don't have mains water, so therefore we don't have restrictions. The only real way that the drought has affected us is that feed prices have risen (hay and grain). Where we are we only had 25 mms less rain than a good year last year, just it didn't fall when it was needed. This year we have had good rains where we are and the crops are looking good.

In Adelaide, they are setting up a trial desal plant and if that is a success they will build a really expensive one. I don't know why they don't just reuse all the strom water, 'coz a guy did a inquiry into it and it would cost millions less than the desal plant and would supply most of Adelaide's water. Tbh if it wasn't for all the cotton fields and rice paddies in northern NSW and south-west Queensland, S.A. wouldnt have a water problem. Finally the S.A. government (which is about 5 years behind the times and wastes money Smiley) have blamed Queensland for a water shortage, which most people have realised since about 20 years ago when the Murray started drying up. Even if the S.A. government can fix the Murray the lower lakes will stilled be stuffed, coz all the soil is being exposed and turning to acid mud. One of the banners that was on the news said: "What's Wong (the water minister's last name)? We Rann (premier's last name) outta water" That's all I can remeber of it. The residenst on the lower lakes have likened Wong to Sudam Hussein, 'coz he mucked up all the lakes and water bodies in Iraq.

Imo, if they stopped all the cotton fields and rice patties, it would fix a lot of problems.
