pmwwwgtalkvForum | Languages (9th Jun 08 at 10:13pm UTC) What do you speak? | | From what I've seen, the English are some of the worst for not speaking any foreign languages. It seems that they expect everyone else to speak English so they don't have to speak French, Spanish etc. which could be seen as quite an arrogant attitude considering we're supposedly one of the world leaders. But when you look at our whole schooling system where foreign languages are very limited and tend to be pushed to one side it's no surprise that so few Brits speak anything other than English.
Being able to speak another language is something I wish I could do and is something I'd like to learn to do someday. At the moment, I don't think I can remember more than a few words of the French I learnt at GCSE which seems a waste.
So does anybody here speak multiple languages? If so what are they and how did you learn them?

pmskypemsnyahoo | Re: Languages (12th Jun 08 at 1:41am UTC) | | I used to be very fluent in French on top of English. I learned it from this one old Jewish woman who used to sub at my high school now and then, me and some of my friends really gotten to know her and came to like her. Our french teacher left, third one and yet we learned no french in french class. She was the only subsitute I liked that was able to explain things to me when I had a question be it math, english or french.
I suggested her to my vice principal, I was asked to wait in the office while she called the district and they hired her full time. Though at the end of the year they had to let her go because she didn't have a full degree. The student body voted on the best new teacher, she won. All my friends and even our vice principal and principal told her finish her degree. She cannot teach French because she doesn't have a degree but she can long term sub which is what she did. But she does have a degree to teach English.
I met her when I was sixteen, I'm nineteen now and still talk to her. She calls me when she cannot figure out various things on her computer. The half a year she was at the high school she constantly pulled me out of my classes I was doing really well in and kept teaching me French and relating to things I loved. I loved reading so she handed me a book which name I forget now that had a little bit of french mixed with SciFi. Within a few weeks she realized I loved SciFi escipally Stargate she handed me the first few seasons and told me to listen to it in English read it in French (subtitles) I'm hard of hearing so I was starting to be forced to learn what the words met to realize what was going on.
Was alot of fun. I should've kept practicing but I ended up getting hospitalized on/off and mom took away net, books and TV for two months

I am still studying Chinese in school, but have a very good understanding of it and could have numerous basic conversations with other people who speak Chinese. I can also write about 400+ characters. 49,600 more to go!

I'm probably going to attempt to learn German no matter what. ( I'm pretty much 100% German )

I am starting with Japanese. I have taken my first year and I'll take it a second year next September. I am also willing to teach anyone who desires to learn it. It will help me remember what I've learned if I do.
I also have the desire to learn Italian and Jewish/Hebrew because they're in my blood.

I've taken 6 levels of it in High School, and when we were in Germany (over the last two weeks) I was able to get by with my broken German. I plan to study in Germany when I'm in college, and when I'm there I'd like to learn French.
