(5th Mar 08 at 4:09pm UTC) I'm not sure about in firefox, but in internet explorer they can be used as a shortcut to submit a form or jump to a textbox. eg. pressing "Alt"+"P" will press the "Preview Message" button on this forum as it has the access key of "p".
