pmwwwgtalkvForum | Search Engine Friendly URLs Introduced (26th Nov 07 at 8:21pm UTC) | | One of the biggest challenges facing forum owners in todays highly competitive internet is to get users to find their site. There's so many different forums out there that it can be hard to get a high enough ranking in the search engines which would enable potential users to find you.
One key to getting your site indexed is to have URLs which the search engines can read and understand. This is achieved by removing all of the ampersands and equals signs and replacing them with the Solidus sign, more commonly known as a forward slash. Doing this gives the impression that your site is made up of a number of folders at different levels, which helps the search engine understand the structure of your forum.
Example Old URL: http://support.virtualforums.co.uk/?action=view_topic&board=support&topic=1196012798&page=1
Example New URL: http://support.virtualforums.co.uk/action/view_topic/board/support/topic/1196012798
If anyone has any questions regarding this change then please just leave a reply below and I'll do my best to answer. - Ross

Search Engine Optimisation. Basically it involves improving the way search engines read and rank your site. The higher your site is ranked, the higher it comes in search result listings such as on Google, Yahoo or Ask.

pmwww | Re: Search Engine Friendly URLs Introduced (10th Dec 07 at 3:47am UTC) | | I think it would be a cool idea to give forum administrators the option of which URL type to use when they register their forum. I know some people much prefer the ?board=general&topic=123456789, so I think you'll attract some more people if a choice is given.
