The only way i can think of this being a problem is the possibility of strain on the serer, but could you make it an option in the modify profile area so that members can chose if they want the mini profile on the left or on the right?

It could be an option for the admin of a forum when doing the mini-profile layout/template.

ya that would be really nice as well, but i cant ever see myself using that..
