Merge Accounts - Posted By Marc (cr0w) on 2nd Jan 08 at 1:24am
An idea I was thinking of would be to allow users to merge accounts. I'll explain below.

Say I join http://blah.virtualforums.co.uk. I think it would be cool if I could go to my profile, and beside "Modify Profile", click on a "Merge Account" link.

On this page, there should be two input boxes. In the first one, I would enter "support". In the second one, I would enter "cr0w".

After submitting, I would return here, to find a div floating at the top right of my screen, saying "Merge Account Request".

Upon clicking the div, it should take me to a page showing which forum & username the request is coming from, then the option to accept or reject the request.

If I reject, a div appears on "blah", saying "Merge Request Declined", which takes me to a page showing details.

If I accept, however, an alert appears on "blah" saying "Merge Request Accepted". When I click on this, I get taken to a page with a bunch of checkboxes, asking me what I would like to transfer. Things like my signature, avatar, contact information, display name, timezone, etc.

I think it would be really sexy, and would save quite a bit of time. {Grin}

I was going to ask ross just to auto register me on every forum! {Tongue Out}

Good idea though..

I like it! {Cheesy}

Then you'd still have to enter your time zone info, gender, display name, signature, avatar, contact info, privacy settings, IM info, etc. {Wink}

Not necessarily! {Wink} - I could ask him to set those to a default! {Tongue Out}

Sounds like a good idea but it should have a limit. It could get annoying getting asked all the time if you are a big forum.

Good point; make it a profile option to be able to either enable, disable, or enable once the merge feature. {Smile} That way, you could just set it to "Enable Once" when you're about to merge the account, then it auto-resets when you've merged. {Wink}

I reckon 3 options: Permanently on.. merge once... permanently off.

I know I would use this feature,and would want it on permanently! {Cheesy}

That would make life much easier. Add it Ross {Cheesy}

Wait, wtf, some loser actually made a site called blah. Who would do such a childish thing? *runs away*

this sounds like an amazing idea {Tongue Out} would take a hell of alot of coding though tbh.

and to transfer data from one website to another is pretty hard.

Doubt it is... just copying a row in a database to another table in the database... (or something like that! {Tongue Out} )

Seriously guys, why the need for swearing?

Also gray, I hope you know that's a waste of database space...plus it's kinda rude. {Unsure}

meh, you are right. Deleted it. Surprised I got the confirmation code right in order to delete it.

Swearing is cool I guess if you aren't insulting members, but on a support site like this, I agree with crow. Leave it at home xD. We need to be professional

Rather than floating divs giving information like that could I do it via the PM system? It'd be a lot less work that way although it'll still be quite a lot of work to prevent any security holes appearing.

Re: Merge Accounts - Posted By Graham (amusedtodeath) on 2nd Jan 08 at 11:00am
I think the PM system would be more effective way to confirm the merging.

It's an idea i really like the sound of {Smile}

PM system would be best! {Smile}

I've decided to do this with password authorization and (for now at least) it'll only apply to new accounts. A link will be added somewhere on the register page where a user can choose to "Import" an account from another forum.

Hawt, thanks Ross. {Smile} Smiley
