What if you had a fame option.. like the karma option on PB. It could be a unique add-on?

Re: Fame? - Posted By Graham (amusedtodeath) on 7th Mar 08 at 2:33pm
Aye, that could work {Smile} Not the world's biggest fan of the "karma" system but it does seem to be popular.

Re: Fame? - Posted By Michael (wrighty) on 7th Mar 08 at 4:15pm
When this was last suggested, it was decided that it wouldn't be added.

Ross then said that if you could make a very strong point for it, he would contemplate adding it.

For this to be in with a chance of being added, you will have to persuade Ross with lots of GOOD uses for it. {Smile}

Re: Fame? - Posted By Nick (nickb) on 8th Mar 08 at 5:27am
My good use would be for:

{Tongue Out} Those are the 3 I could think of at the moment.
I give respect to the ones that deserve it, like devotion to the forum, really good activity, helping the staff members, etc.

But it could be an option to use it or not.

Re: Fame? - Posted By Marc (cr0w) on 8th Mar 08 at 5:45am
The reason this was rejected was because of abuse, though.

People intentionally "smiting" others just because they don't like them, or a group of people turning on one person, smiting them say 20 times an hour total. {Unsure}

Re: Fame? - Posted By Nick (nickb) on 8th Mar 08 at 5:54am
There could be a code to take out the smite, California {R.I.P} had made one.

Sure people will smite other people because they don't like that person, thats how life is, thats what people do at school, work, public places, etc.

I don't know, I still don't much like the whole Karma/Fame thing.

It just seems like more of a popularity thing than what it's actually meant for; thanking people for helpful posts, or for being kind, etc.

Re: Fame? - Posted By dog199200 (dog199200) on 8th Mar 08 at 6:27am
ya i'm for this considering i tried to get it added, but under a different title and was rejected {Smile} considering this system works great modded

Re: Fame? - Posted By Graham (amusedtodeath) on 8th Mar 08 at 9:29am
Perhaps if it were implemented with the (admin side) option to choose "exalt and smite" or just "exalt", so admins can choose which setting they can use?

Re: Fame? - Posted By Michael (wrighty) on 8th Mar 08 at 9:50am
Yes it should have the three options:
Disabled
Exalt
Smite & Exalt

and the limit for smiting should be set to 2 hours. (same with exalting).

I suggest you wait for Ross to give the final say.

Re: Fame? - Posted By Ross (admin) on 8th Mar 08 at 12:09pm
I'm yet to see a karma/fame/whatever you want to call it system work well. As Marc pointed out, it always ends up as a popularity contest and I find that alienates more members than it helps.

More persuasion is needed on this as to how it could help a forum.

Re: Fame? - Posted By dog199200 (dog199200) on 8th Mar 08 at 8:16pm
Well for starters everyone wants it to be added, thats should be a good enough reason...and you know how helpful this can be for setting up things in the forum? Maybe not the karma system it's but with it being edited with codes there is so much that the karma system can be used for all because of the exalt setup giving you the options to. One way for sure that this can be used is in competitions, for example on a vBulletin i'm an admin on we are setting up something called Pie Day and how it work is that everyone that signs up wil have a karma area added and it will say Pie'd and the person at the end of the day that taken part ib it and has the ;east amount of times being pie'd will get a prize, there is one example that the karma system can be used for. I have so many more examples of how this can be used, the problem is that most people don't have a clue how to use it. I would really like this to be added, so if you wnat i can keep posting examples, and you can't fight the inevitable, this will get added in sooner or later and you know it, everyone wants it and they will just keep asking till they get it, so why not give everyone what they wont {Smile}

Re: Fame? - Posted By Nick (nickb) on 8th Mar 08 at 10:43pm
*Points up* That sounds really good ^_^ {Grin}

Re: Fame? - Posted By dog199200 (dog199200) on 8th Mar 08 at 11:38pm
wow i didn;t realize how rude i sounded in that, sorry about that...

Re: Fame? - Posted By Nick (nickb) on 8th Mar 08 at 11:40pm
It wasn't rude, you were just voicing your opinion. ^_^

Not everyone wants it added, and the chances are the more that people ask for it, the less chance there is it'll be added. It's Ross' choice at the end, and his word is final.

Re: Fame? - Posted By Cryhavoc_ (virtuoso) on 9th Mar 08 at 1:17pm
I'd suggest you don't use that ideology Graham, it's what brought SSD to it's knees. XD

Re: Fame? - Posted By Graham (amusedtodeath) on 9th Mar 08 at 3:07pm
Don't get me wrong, i'm happy to see this system implemented but i don't like the whole "oh, you'll have to do it anyway there's no point in denying it" attitude. It's with Ross at the end of the day and if, as he has stated there isn't a worthwhile reason for it to be implemented then it won't.

Re: Fame? - Posted By Nick (nickb) on 12th Mar 08 at 11:20pm
then if not implemented then make it a code {Tongue Out}

Re: Fame? - Posted By dog199200 (dog199200) on 2nd Apr 08 at 11:41pm
ya if its not going to be implemented then can you at least make a code for it so i can convert over a few other codes that i have made that works with karma ?

Re: Fame? - Posted By ajay (ajay) on 2nd Apr 08 at 11:43pm

Aye, that could work {Smile} Not the world's biggest fan of the "karma" system but it does seem to be popular.

I am not a fan of karma either. I like fame. And maybe the "exalt" could be like loser or something {Tongue Out}

Re: Fame? - Posted By dog199200 (dog199200) on 2nd Apr 08 at 11:48pm
umm Exalt is the adding one Smite is the bad one, and i mean for karma its self is stupid, but what the karma system can be changed to is what makes it worth adding in, the karma system can added to and recoded in so many ways to make some really awesome setups for a forum. I would know i started coding for proboards through the karma system.

Re: Fame? - Posted By LEG7930 (lauren) on 3rd Apr 08 at 3:38am
I think it should be an option. Like whem you go to Forum Settings you can click Smite and Exalt or just exalt or just disable. It would be good for an RPG. Like if there is a "presidential election" the candidate with the most Rep/Karma/Fame could win. That is what I would use it for anyways.

I do realize that it can be abused, but somehow you could make it so you (the admin of the forum) sees who smites and who they smitted. And monitor it by that, if the admin sees a problem, they could warn or do w/e.

What you could also do it add it as an additional profile option.

You could also make it so the forum admin chooses the name to call it (Karma, Rep, Fame)

Re: Fame? - Posted By Michael (wrighty) on 12th Apr 08 at 3:41pm
Ok, so it seems that it people would like it implemented with the following features:

- ability to Rename it
- ability to remove 'smite'
- ability to give members option to opt-in or opt-out
- ability to change 'time between action'

Also having a 'karma' log. So that you can see who 'exalted'/'smited'

Re: Fame? - Posted By tricky.cb (crazyblue) on 12th Apr 08 at 6:10pm
Here is my whole opinion on Karma/Fame.

I don't think it's a bad thing at all. Mainly because give the admins power to edit total karma by just modifying a profile will end the idea that someone will get -20 karma or what ever. It could go either way too. If a person is attempting to get more karma for what ever reason and it's abusing the system, just reset it. If people are abusing the system negatively on another user, hand out warning, and reset it.

Reasons why it should be added..

It helps people know how reliable the person they are getting answers or replies from. It also is a sign of a good member. Someone with 10+ karma is someone who must be a good active person, and is probably nice. Someone will -2 karma is probably someone who spams, flames, etc.

I'm not to sure if this would work, but it could keep people from spamming, flaming, etc. Because who honestly would want negative karma unless it was a joke?

Re: Fame? - Posted By Nick (nickb) on 24th May 08 at 5:54pm
On this forum that I am on from PB, they use the Karma system for like Good Rper,respect, like if you respect an admin you give them karma, or if you have over 10 or 20 karma, and it makes you feel like you are respected, and thats always a good thing. Its kinda hard to explain, when you are really tired, and only had a few hours sleep. XD

Re: Fame? - Posted By Fel!x (felix) on 25th May 08 at 2:30am
I myself am not a fan of Karma or Fame or Reputation, I find it abused often and becomes the reason for many fights and arguments. That said I have seen it used sensibly and responsibly in some cases.

One place where I found it was used properly was on quite a large forum where the admin was not able to be on much. They had a very large staff support who kept it running, but when it came to seeing who was responsible and hwo was helpful among the community she would have no idea if it weren't for Karma.
There was no Smite option, but the idea was you only exalted if you a) thought the member had been helpful in an issue or b) found the member to be active and involved. I can't say there wasn't popularity exalting, but on the whole the active and responsible members were the ones who had the most Karma.

I may not see it as a useful or necessary on any forum, but it can be a good feature just the same.

Re: Fame? - Posted By Paddy (artemis) on 25th May 08 at 4:06am
I, personally, have never been a fan- I always saw it like post count. Just a way to quantize quality. But I've also never supported denying things to people who want them, just because some don't want them. So I'm in favor of choices- assuming it's not a strain on the server, or anything.

I, personally, don't see myself using it, though.

This has now been implemented in the most recent update! {Smile}
