I manually typed in the [img]link[/img] in my thread in the test board. Saved, works perfectly. Now when I modified it the [img] turned into [img ]

It's to do with the lack of an alt text. The parser adds the space regardless of it any has been set ot not. However [img ] still works and will still display the image
