Sorry, I've been away for a while so this may have been a feature I missed. I notice in the Introductions thread the new thread button is missing? Is it because I am not a new user, and in that case why am I able to create a poll?

It's setup so only New/Junior members can create topics in there. It's unlikely that anyone of a higher rank than that would need to start a topic introducing themselves
