vForums Skin Competition - Posted By Marc (cr0w) on 31st Dec 07 at 10:51pm
You've seen it at other forum providers, now it's time for vForums to have one! {Grin}

Our skin competition will work a little differently than others, however. Rather than just being made the default skin for the support forum, the 5 winning skins will be default templates for all vForums!

What we mean by this, is that when users register for a new forum, there will be a new step added. We will show thumbnails of all 5 skins where the user can choose which of these skins to use as their starting point, or to start from scratch.

So, if you want the world [or at least those on vForums] to know how well you can design, get a team together [or do it yourself], and design the best skin you possibly can! {Smile}

If you would like to join the competition, please post below. Be sure to include the names of everyone in your team. Or if you have any questions about the competition then post below or send me a PM and we'll do our best to answer it.

Good luck to everyone, and happy new year! {Grin}

RULES

Entries Due: To be announced.

Extra Codes Allowed: Unlimited, provided they don't lag.

Crossbrowser: Must work in FF, IE, and Opera.

Entry Judging: Polls

Keep it Secret: Please do not tell others which skin you have made, and don't tell others if you know who created a certain skin. This is a skin competition, not a popularity contest about members.

On all forums? Nice.

What about codes, can we add extra codes?

And, btw I'm probably in (will see if it's a team thing when you answer my question)

Yeah, you can add extra codes. It'll be up to Ross to put a limit on the number, though.

Re: vForums Skin Competition - Posted By Michael (wrighty) on 31st Dec 07 at 11:41pm
As far as I know, it has to be coded. I will be around in the code requests area if there are any codes that you need! {Smile}

Also, it has to be CB in FF, IE AND Opera.

Not yet. We'll see how much interest there is first.

What about codes, can we add extra codes?

Yes. There's no limit on the number of codes you can add as they'll proabably be merged/optimised before going live anyway. But so long as they don't create too much lag it shouldn't be an issue.

Still need of finding a team though {Smile}

Doesn't have to be a team, you can be alone! {Smile}

Re: vForums Skin Competition - Posted By Kronus (kronus) on 31st Dec 07 at 11:53pm
I'm not good enough to make one alone, but I'm interested in this. If anyone wants to incorporate me into a team, I'd be happy. {Grin}

Re: vForums Skin Competition - Posted By Michael (wrighty) on 1st Jan 08 at 11:04pm
Few questions {Tongue Out}

1) What are to be done with entries?
2) Should the admin name be set to "Admin" on the forum & with the email address hidden?
3) Should a test user be created? (if a forum has a different display for users & guests?)

1) I'd say to a nominated member of staff.
2) I think so, it'll help with the judging process if there's no way to tell who the creator is. I'd also add no visible copyrights too.
3) That'd be a good idea, as long as it doesn't get abused too much.

Re: vForums Skin Competition - Posted By Michael (wrighty) on 1st Jan 08 at 11:15pm
2 - a copyright will be added to the forums in the future... so for now, just a blank one! {Cheesy}

And yeah, I guess the nominated member of staff is cr0w! {Tongue Out}

Crow or I will be fine.

If needs be I can disable modifying of the test users profile (or something similar) to make sure it's not abused.

Re: vForums Skin Competition - Posted By Michael (wrighty) on 2nd Jan 08 at 12:10am
That would be appreciated Ross! {Cheesy}

The main abuse i was thinking of was any flaming, as technically everyone would have access to a profile. I highly doubt that would happen, but best to cover as many bases as possible.

Re: vForums Skin Competition - Posted By Marc (cr0w) on 2nd Jan 08 at 1:25am
I agree; until the voting is complete [there will likely be a few rounds of voting], there should be no recognizable evidence of who created what.

Now, I'm assuming the entries will be handled the same way as other competitions. Create a test forum where you will put up your skin, then PM either me and Ross your entry URL.

Copyrights can be added when you send the skin to me or Ross [if you win]. {Smile}

Just curious, are we permitted to do a whole-scale modification of it?

Such as how a few of us did on Xino? Or is that a bit too un-orthodox for an official support forum?

The final verdict on that is up to Ross, but in my eyes, support forums are supposed to be for the members; so shouldn't the skin be what the members like best, as well? {Wink}

I think it'll be fine, but we'll see what Ross says. {Smile}

Re: vForums Skin Competition - Posted By Michael (wrighty) on 3rd Jan 08 at 6:33pm
I see no problem with it... the skin is going to be an alternative and also it'll be put as a default option for other forums that are registered. I think it would make it better if it came with modified features! {Smile}

You can be as un-orthodox as you want. The skin won't be forced onto anyone so they can choose not to use it if they don't like it {Smile}

Lol, don't set a date till updates are done, if head/base everywhere is used, IC remodels, mini-profile remodles and such come into use then it will drastically reduce the coding time. I'm not even sure if Ross will add a post splitter XD so theirs a lot to be said. {Wink}

Erm, not a lot of people use Safari, and even less people use Netscape, so it isn't a big issue.

But common knowledge states that to be cross browser, it should work in all the browsers. {Tongue Out}

Re: vForums Skin Competition - Posted By Graham (amusedtodeath) on 4th Jan 08 at 2:20pm
I use Safari to check any site issues {Tongue Out} Thing with a project like this is it pretty much has to work in all browsers i guess.

Re: vForums Skin Competition - Posted By Marc (cr0w) on 7th Jan 08 at 12:35am
Tricky, wouldn't that be a bit pointless, since if you win one of the top places, it'll be a default option anyway? {Wink}

We're still missing one of the templating features meaning most won't be able to customize the info center. Once that's done, we can set a deadline. I'm wanting some high quality entries though so we'll need to give everyone long enough to complete their entry to the best of the abilities {Smile}

Anyway, i might make a layout if i can get some inspiration, but there's some stiff competition! {Unsure}

No, but it will help me out with Transparent, as PS 7.0 doesn't work, and Paint Shop Pro 9, wont either for Trans.

Re: vForums Skin Competition - Posted By Michael (wrighty) on 10th Jan 08 at 8:20pm
I don't think there is any limit at the moment. but I think submitting 500 skins is silly. So be sensible...Perhaps 2 or 3 max.

Agreed. We don't want to be spammed by users submitting 100s of templates, we'd rather there be fewer higher quality entries {Smile}

Only when the proper noun has no specification of capitalization attached to it, which is usually the case.

Think about it this way- we're always taught that words in the middle of a sentence are lowercase, unless they're proper nouns, like California. The word has a capitalization associated with it, and so we use that capitalization, giving it priority over the sentence's grammatical requirements. tricky has specified a lowercase 't', and so that gets precedence over the sentence's need to start with a capital letter.
