Designing for money - Posted By tricky.cb (crazyblue) on 28th Mar 08 at 1:37am
Well, I'm in the need for money, and it's something I've been considering doing to get that money. Also it seems like a nice discussion.

How many of you would take up a career as a graphics designer?

I wouldn't mind it because it's something I enjoy, and the yearly salary can be like 85,000+ which is pretty nice in my opinion. The only thing I'd dislike is the periods of time when you might not be able to design or you don't have any clients.

Re: Designing for money - Posted By blanka (blanka) on 28th Mar 08 at 1:51am
I certainly would. {Smile}

Recently, 2 people have asked me to make them a forum template for $60 each which was nice because i got the chance to buy some video games from the money I've earn from it. Doing something that i enjoy and getting money off from it, is fabulous!

But deadlines can be a pain in the butt, especially for a school student. {Unsure}

Someone offered me money to make a Proboards skin for them. But I said no, because like Blanka said, it is hard to meet deadlines with school.

Re: Designing for money - Posted By Nick (nickb) on 28th Mar 08 at 4:10am
Ive done all my designs free, and I made a website for a teacher he said he was going to pay me by the hour, $20 an hour, I spent almost 48 hours on it, my whole weekend, I wanted it to be perfect, he said it didn't need to be done for 1 month. So I got done with it in 2 days, $20 x 48 hours = $960. He also said money is no problem. So I made it, I sent him several emails, I tried to contact him at school both no replies, So several weeks later, I deleted it. And to this day still no emails, or calls.

I'v designed some templates for money about $125-$150 each. But those have primarily been websites, I'm starting off with paid forum designs soon.

I'm doing a couple of websites at the moment for people - they're a great opportunity as there's a very good chance that it'll open up a few more clients for me too {Cheesy}

My goal is to be a designer full time - i've got a lot to learn but i think i can just about keep up.

Re: Designing for money - Posted By Michael (wrighty) on 28th Mar 08 at 12:47pm
I know a few designers who come to me to code their stuff for them. I do it free (for this one guy at the moment anyway), but soon... I'll start charging! {Cool}

I want to though {Cry}

I'd probably try to contact him at the school he works. That's not right. =/ Really sucks that you got screwed over at the large amount of money too.

You can either get it by paypal or by mail. I just like to get it deliver by mail just because it's easiet.

I'm sure there are other ways. {Smile}

Gah, i've only ever helped one client who asked me to design a brochure, but i only found him with the help of my "pro" friend.

I'm getting really into coding the designs I make now, so I may be able to do this as a job for a bit, but the only problem is deadlines. Not sure exactly how that will work out {Tongue Out}

In the past I had one woman offer to pay me to make websites for her clients. A couple of them I was paid for.

Awhile back someone offered to pay me to make them a large number of individual graphics. I made them, the person claimed to have mailed the money but it was returned so she was going to mail it again .... never got it and she wouldn't reply to my PMs. {Rolleyes} So she got the 80 graphics I made her and I got nothing. LOL

About a month or so ago someone sent me a PM offering to pay me to make them a complete forum template. I was paid $50 for it.

The extra money certainly comes in handy but it's not often that someone offers to pay. LOL

I would sue her. Find her website and report her.

While I do think it was extremely rude of her I wouldn't go that far.

And besides, she abandoned pretty much every forum account that I was aware that she had. She even abandoned her own forum.

I've done one or two bits for clients which i'm getting paid for...there's a massive hold up on some of them though, which is a pain {Sad}

I've just had an interview for a Junior Web Designer, so if i get the job, soon i'll be doing it for a living {Cheesy}

A place called Godalming, which is about 45 mins from my place. {Smile}

It's a pity you don't live a bit nearer to me as we (meaning the company I work with) are looking for a new front end developer as well as a new designer. So if anyone does live in north surrey {Wink} *hint hint*

Can I join? {Cheesy}

Yeah, Anything further than about 45 mins to an hour is pushing it a bit, especially as i don't have a car of my own at the moment (sharing with my mum). Unless the money was excellent of course {Tongue Out} Also, they're probably after what i can't offer {Sad}

First of all, are the posts on this page out of order (ie, posts being quoted and responded to before they're made) for anyone else?

Secondly, I've programmed and 'designed' - meaning adapted open source, free templates to the software I wrote - several sites for people now.

I always do it for free.

I feel once I start charging, I have an obligation to excellence, and am not sure I can perform excellence. So I just do people favors, instead.

Plus, it's fun.

I noticed that yesterday. I had to look a couple times to see that I was seeing it correctly. So, your not the only one.

Re: Designing for money - Posted By Michael (wrighty) on 2nd May 08 at 8:47pm
Posts are out of order due to the DOS attack putting the time out.

Yeah, i think it was a problem when we had the server issues. It seems to be an isolated incident thankfully {Smile}
