OK i don't know where to post this so its going here, if this ain't where it goes then plz move it to the right place. I'm going to start making an MMORPG soon and i need to find a cheap server or a host that will allow me to host my game on there server. Can someone please point me in the direction of either a host that i can host the game on or a cheap server. The spects for the server or host are as of followed:
Realm Crafter Requirements
System requirements
Minimum Server: P2-600MHz, 128 MB RAM, internet connection with a static IP
Edit: I removed the unneeded info
We have a couple of suggestions in this thread, though it sounds like what you want is a dedicated server, and those won't come cheap...

What you describe is a hoem PC, servers don't run xp, or have a soundcard. or a graphics card.

You're reading the minimum client requirements.

I'm not into gaming but what is MMORPG also will this be like a game server that a client connects to and plays other people?
MMORPG: Massive Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game.
So think Guild Wars. Or Everquest. Or World of Warcraft.

From what you say by the server you could probably run it off a VPS or a VDS.
umm i know a lot about computers, but i know nothing about servers, so i have no clue what you just said![]()
Virtual Private Server
Virtual Dedicated Server
ah ok ty, ok i'll google each of those and see what i find
If your going to start a MMORPG, and plan on going places with it your probably going to be better off trying to figure out if you can get a server that you run yourself. Its better to have one that you know will run 24/7, you don't have to call support when it goes down, and people can enjoy it.
ya i know that, but i was going to put it on a host or something till iu can at least get 4k to buy a server of my own.
Just make sure you know how to take care of your server, and the things that are needed to keep it secure and running.
Servers cost more than just the computer; you need to consider UPS setups, coolant systems, some DDNS support from your ISP, possibly some bandwidth upgrades with your ISP, etc.
Also, you need to be sure your server is protected against DDOS attacks, hacks, cracks, XSS, and other security holes.
i know all of that..well most of it, i know how to build one, and i have a basic knowledge of how to run one. but I don't have a clue how to set it upm as far as hardware and stuff and i know its different from a computer, but i have a teacher at the school that has setup the whole server system between all three school in my town and he owns me a favor so i'll have him help me set it up...now just wondering could i get a list of all the needed parts plz and a place where the parts are cheap, i only know of Newegg.com
Edit: if i had to buy one i was thinking something alone the lines of this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16859323 004
also here is a whole list of servers that newegg.com sells: here
but to go with the least money i could go with something like this, it think it will work.. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16859105 379
i know there isn't much of a reason to bump this, because i had gotten my answer, but can i please get an answer if the servers that i posted the links to would work..
ok so i'm going to take that as a no...
I didn't look at the servers you posted but, I highly suggest not buying your own server unless your going to colocate it even then it's not a good idea.
If you colocate your own server and a harddrive fails you have to pay for a new one and pay a technician to install it. Colocation is usually the same price for a decent dedicated server with allthe things listed below.
If you run it out of your house, you have to manage it, your home internet connection won't be good for running a server it'll be slow. You don't have UPS , you don't have the massive firewalls that datacenters have. Your not there 24/7 to replace hardware. You most likely don't have backups of all your hardware. You probably won't get a discount for some software like datacenters get.
If you go through a data center you get, 24/7 tech support(if it doesn't have it don't get it). They will replace the hardware if it fails, you get some software support, they have multiple bandwith providers. They have big firewalls to fight ddos.
Those are just some simple breakdowns. NOTE: not all things I said are true for every data center but a good one should have all those plus more.
ya i know all the risks...I have been informed of all of that from my schools technical manager...i asked him like what i would need to set one up and what problems i might have before i even considered getting one. But i'm not to keen on the idea of using a host. I would rather know that i have fun control of my data at all time. To begin with the server will be going towards running a MMORPG game, so it would be best if i had my own server. Also as for the internet slowing down. Thats ok with me, i'll just get a better internet, but i thing DSL will work fine enough as it is. Umm as for the firewall..umm if i'm going to do it i will do it right, i don't care how much money i end up putting into the server to make it a safe as possible. But as for the breaking down and discounts you do have a point, i am only 16 and i have a hard enough time as is getting money for i cant seem to get a job anywhere...again that puts me at host or my own...i am thinking about starting out using a host and then when i am better fit to run a server myself then i'll buy one...

The thing with a dedicated server is that it's so you and only you control your data, the datacenter won't login do anything to server unless you tell them to or you break a law or the TOS. Most of the time if you do either they jsut unplug it and charge you money to get it back up and your data is still there. You shouldn't ever loose data if your doing backups daily of your harddrive.
If your worried about not having control of your data think about htis.
*I hate to use this example but I must*
are you familiar with probaords.com they use around 107 servers I beleive, they have them all located at a datacenter called theplanet (www.theplanet.com) they never lose data to the host. You just need to get a reliable host.
I can recomend a few....

If you still have any question's on datacenters or anything feel free to IM me.
ah will do and i'll check out those hosts
