-_-.....

So, I had my host change my site link from thedirectory.2x.nu to idirectory.2x.nu they had a DNS problem after they changed it... and then they had to back up all my data, and that was last week... Well so tonight I messaged the support back, and asked them what's going on, and they said one of my files were corrupted, and said they would have to re-do my site. I am hoping that it's not the HTML, and PHP files Dwight had set up for me.... I just hope it's not that, and that it's one of their stuff... because this is a big pain, if it is....

Has anyone of you had any problems with your hosts like this?

-_-

Nope.

I keep my own backups.

My host emails me a copy of my backup each week.

Ahh I see.

I guess that's the price you pay when you go with a free host. >_< But also neglect on my part to. {Tongue Out}

I love my host. I host a website there that uses 250 gb bandwidth a month. x_x. They're awesome. I pay extra for the bandwidth, but I like their rates.

I paid 32 bucks for six months of really good 100% uptime hosting. The guys that run it are awesome and kind. (This was before I moved my big site there). I love them even more with my big site there though it costs more xD. The rates are really good and they're an American company.

My host allows me to have automatic backups emailed to me on a regular basis, so no, I've never had that issue. {Tongue Out}

I had a very close call last week. Not due to a problem with the hosting company but due to a problem with me {Shocked}

I ran an install script for our content management system which I developed (and have spent the past 2 weeks recoding to make it even better). I did something wrong during the process (I ran it as a re-install rather than an install) which caused it to mess up a bit. I went to undo that (so I could reinstall from scratch) and accidentally deleted the most important folder on the entire server - the folder which contained 90% of the front end code, 90% of the admin panel code and 90% of the installation code for all of the modules. A folder which there was no recent backup of and no other copy of (the most recent backup was from 2 weeks ago)!

Fortunately there was a happy ending... I was able to go into my temporary files (SmartFTP stores a copy of everything I edit there) and get all of the missing files from there. That could have been disastrous! {Sad}

So... I've now written an auto-backup script which will create a compressed file of every important directory on the server 3 times a week. Next week I'm going to setup one of the machines in the office to automatically download and store these {Cool}

As for the subject of this topic, I've been fairly fortunate with my hosts. We've had many issues, with various companies but they've always dealt with the issue well and (as far as I can remember) we've never lost any files. I think we had a close call once on the server this support forum runs on - it was after replacing a failing HDD one of the databases became locked with no way of accessing the data within it. The hosts (Big Wet Fish) managed to restore it from the file on the old HDD {Smile}

Well DM, as you know I have had a problem like that more then once, and its not to do me not having a backup, its more or less do to the host screwing up and deleting my account completely or updating their system, and in doing this not allowing my backup to work {Unsure} I can't wait till I am able to get a good server to host my own sites off of {Unsure}

Ouch, that would suck if smart FTP wasn't there to the rescue there Ross.

Ahh yeah, I remember you telling me about your host deleting your account for some reason.

Also my files are fine, they have to make a new database user for me, not sure what that meant. But they should be making it now, and setting my files back into the correct place. {Smile}

When my host switched to PHP5 and was upgrading all the servers, somehow my .htccss file got removed. I was not home and had no clue this was gone. My blog was all screwed up till i was able to create a new one. The host should of told us they was upgrading all servers because i would of made a backup of everything. I lost some traffic because site was down for about 10 hours. lol

Other then that no other problems. Right now i am trying to cleanout the junk tables in my mysql database. What i hate is when you remove plugins from wordpress, it removes all the files but does not remove the tables the plugin created automatically in mysql. There some tables in there i have no clue what they are but i do make a backup before i touch anything. It's good to run a few backups of mysql and your whole site weekly.

I'd rather loose a few days of information then loose it all.
