Portable Web Browsing - Posted By Ross (admin) on 31st Dec 09 at 1:07am
I've been looking at getting something which will enable me to browse the "web" (emails, vforums etc.) without having to turn on my PC or laptop. I've been trying to find the best gadget to do this. So far, I've seen:

iPod Touch - touch-screen keyboard, needs wi-fi to connect to Internet
Cost from £130 (8GB version) - £200 (32GB version)

PSP - no keyboard, needs wi-fi to connect to the Internet
Cost from £130

Pocket Surfer - Querty keyboard, GPRS connection to Internet for 30hrs per month (costs £30pa), no wi-fi
Cost £200 (including first years browsing)

I've decided that the best source of information to help me decide is you guys {Cool} Has anyone used any of the above devices? Or are there other suggestions on what I could use?

* Note, the prices are based on some very rough research {Tongue Out}

Palm Pre {Wink}

That's what I use when out and about. Of course, will replace your mobile, but emails are pushed - showing up much like texts - and can search internet too..

Make a mobile version of vF please?

Re: Portable Web Browsing - Posted By Ross (admin) on 31st Dec 09 at 1:27am
At £500 I think it's a bit pricey for occasional use? And at that price I'd be afraid to take it anywhere in case I broke it {Lips Sealed}

When I have a mobile device to work on I will do everything I can to make vF mobile friendly {Tongue Out}

Where'd you find that?

Get it on a contract - £30 a month - £100 for the phone, or something like that with O2.

That then equates to £625.73 with the 18 month contact. I don't really use my mobile phone enough to justify that {Unsure} Although it would be nice to have web access anywhere, it's not all that essential.

I use PSP, half the time I'm on vF I am on a PSP

Re: Portable Web Browsing - Posted By Nick (nickb) on 2nd Jan 10 at 4:57am
I use my PSP, I can email sometimes connect to VFS (if the graphics let me. {Tongue Out} ) I connect to ebuddy.com which lets me log into MSN, Yahoo, GTalk, AOL, and Facebook. I can get onto some sites (If graphics let me.) If the graphics do not let me enter onto a site made for computers, I simply shut off the graphics part, and all I see is text from there on. Plus if you do not want to be online at times. You can go and play games! {Grin}

I wouldn't mind the iPod, probably faster, though the PSP 3000 Series (Slim/Brite) is much faster than the 1000 series on which I have. {Tongue Out} I think the PSP Go is fast to, never seen one so cant really tell ya.

How do you find the method of typing on the PSP? I've seen some videos of it and it seems like it would take quite a bit of getting used to?

Re: Portable Web Browsing - Posted By Aiken (ionfortuna) on 3rd Jan 10 at 1:44am
Once you get the hang of it you can type quite fast on the PSP

Re: Portable Web Browsing - Posted By Nick (nickb) on 4th Jan 10 at 4:14am
Yeah it is pretty easy to text. There are many formats for the key board, like the phone TXT pad, and qwerty. I tried to make a post, and my router was messing up and did'nt know and I lost about 2 paragraphs worth. Thats the only thing that sucks about it. {Tongue Out}

It is easier than typing on a cellphone actually

Very true. {Smile} I do find it easier to type on my PSP then my phone.

Re: Portable Web Browsing - Posted By Aiken (ionfortuna) on 6th Jan 10 at 8:08am
Yeah, even though my phone has a full keyboard

Re: Portable Web Browsing - Posted By Nick (nickb) on 6th Feb 10 at 8:53pm
I say go with the iPod touch now. It's allot easier to type on here than it is on a psp {Tongue Out} I have an 8GB iPod touch. {Smile}

Re: Portable Web Browsing - Posted By RuhRoe (mezorro) on 7th Feb 10 at 1:30am
There is also the DSI but it can be pretty slow. I would recommend iPod Touch.

Re: Portable Web Browsing - Posted By Nick (nickb) on 7th Feb 10 at 2:13am
Yeah. I zoom around on here like if I was on a computer. Though if you are listening to music and surfing the net for an extended amount of time. The battery dies quicker. Vf loads fast. {Smile}

Rossy, have you looked at getting a Blackberry?

Blackberries are really good for business use; they work very well with emails, they can IM/text any other Blackberry anywhere in the world for free, internet browsing on them works very well, etc.

Re: Portable Web Browsing - Posted By Ross (admin) on 7th Feb 10 at 10:19pm
Lately I have been looking more and more at getting an Internet enabled phone. There seems to be more of them around with wi-fi now. And some of them are surprisingly cheap.

Re: Portable Web Browsing - Posted By Nick (nickb) on 8th Feb 10 at 3:43pm
If you want a phone, then go with what Marc suggested. A blackberry would be perfect for what you want. I forgot what the new blackberry is called though.

Re: Portable Web Browsing - Posted By Ross (admin) on 10th Feb 10 at 11:20pm
Hmmm, it seems like I really don't have a clue what I'm doing around mobile phones {Tongue Out}

What are peoples suggestions for a good phone? Looking mainly for their Internet capabilities. There seems to be some massive differences in price between the higher end (say an iPhone or Palm Pre) and other models - I'm guessing there must be a good reason for it but am having trouble seeing it? At the moment I'm just getting confused with it all as I don't really know what I should be looking for {Unsure}

Re: Portable Web Browsing - Posted By Michael (wrighty) on 11th Feb 10 at 12:02am
Well what do you want for from a web phone?
iPhone can only have one browser open at a time.
Palm Pre can have many open at once etc... {Smile}

Re: Portable Web Browsing - Posted By Nick (nickb) on 11th Feb 10 at 5:45am
Someone told me that the New black berry is good, and cheap. Not sure how many browsers can be open.

Though I'll stick with my iPod, reason is, vF (all forums) load up really fast. and all the coding is compatible. I even tried it on The Directory, and other sites, and it all loads up quite fast, and nothing out of place. {Smile}

If your coding is valid then yes, things'll work. The thing to realise Ross is that iPhones don't have Flash support ... Adobe won't let apple touch it. So you might want to factor that in too. {Smile}

Re: Portable Web Browsing - Posted By Nick (nickb) on 11th Feb 10 at 3:08pm
Really? I played some flash games on addicting games bowman 2 is fun to play with touch. {Smile}

Ed: I guess not it was an app I downloaded and did not realize it. {Tongue Out}

A close friend of mine has a Blackberry... he now wants to get rid of it and get an iPhone {Tongue Out}

Re: Portable Web Browsing - Posted By Ross (admin) on 20th Feb 10 at 1:04am
I've been looking at a couple of Android phones (unfortunately only v1.5). As far as I can see, they would do what I'm after. But like I say, I'm pretty clueless with phones {Tongue Out} Any opinions on these or other ones I should be looking at?

LG InTouch Max
Samsung Galaxy Portal

There's one I'm leaning towards but would love to hear what people think {Smile}

Re: Portable Web Browsing - Posted By Nick (nickb) on 21st Feb 10 at 5:39am
Do NOT get an LG touch, read reviews on it first. My LG Glimmer sucks with the touch it's easier to press my iPod than my phone, read several bad reviews on it on several different sites, the Touch is going out on me again for the 3rd time... and this time if it goes out, I can't do nothing about it because the year warranty is done, and I can't get another phone until March 6.

Re: Portable Web Browsing - Posted By Ross (admin) on 9th Mar 10 at 12:45pm
Been meaning to come back to this for a while {Tongue Out}

Hmm, I had read a few reviews on each and they all seemed fairly positive. Are we looking at the same model? (I'm unsure where the LG Glimmer comes into this?). I've used other LG products and have been very happy with them. Based on the reviews I read, I am leaning towards the LG InTouch because of its' keyboard. But if there is a problem with it then please point me in the right direction {Smile}

Re: Portable Web Browsing - Posted By Nick (nickb) on 9th Mar 10 at 3:44pm
I have nothing against lg just the glimmer. {Tongue Out}

Re: Portable Web Browsing - Posted By Michael (wrighty) on 10th Mar 10 at 7:21pm
I still say pre... then you can make apps for it ... they're simple to make ... {Tongue Out}

Looking at the difference in features, I don't think there's any that are worth the extra £10pm {Unsure} The better touch-screen maybe but I don't think I'm going to use it that often as for it to become an issue.

As for Apps, this device is supposed to make me more efficient - it's not supposed to create more work for me {Tongue Out}

Re: Portable Web Browsing - Posted By Nick (nickb) on 12th Mar 10 at 7:15am
Can make an iPod app? {Grin} Guess the Mobile version should come first. >_<
