Ask The Staff - Posted By Marc (cr0w) on 14th Dec 08 at 5:51am
I made a topic like this back in March, and it was quite popular; I decided to post it again.

In this topic, you can ask the staff [whether it be a specific staff member, or all of the staff in general] any question you would like (provided it stays within the ToS). {Smile}

All I ask is that you try to keep the spam to a minimum (and by minimum I mean none. {Wink} )

Haha, I'm slowly getting better. Now it's down to just a stuffed nose and that weak feeling you get when you're sick. Hopefully I'll be back to normal soon. {Smile}

Oooh, that's an interesting one!

We first on a forum we used to both frequent - i joined it out of chance. It was then after we both realised we lived only 20 mins from each other that we got to know each other a bit and decided to meet up. It was then after a lot of dancnig around each other for a few months that we both admitted we liked each other. We've been together for 3 and a half years {Smile} She's like my carer, only with worse pay {Tongue Out}

What's the most dragging part of being staff on VFS?

For me, probably getting the text messages through early in the mornings saying that the server is down. {Sad}

Have any of the staff wanted to shut off their phone due to text messages about server problems while on vacation, in school, etc?

Not really; I try to have an internet connection wherever I go, so I can check in regularly and attend to any issues that may arise. {Smile}

For the two coders , do you guys have any plans to re-do the database and add new codes ??

I'm completly the opposite. The last thing I want is to be without a phone or Internet connection. I know that the essential services on the server are built to autorecover if anything goes wrong with them, and that if that fails Marc and Graham are both capable of getting the server back online in most instances. But I still worry that something will happen whenever I'm not there.

Re: Ask The Staff - Posted By Graham (amusedtodeath) on 16th Dec 08 at 10:35am
Here's one or two:

Before you were made staff, did you have aspirations of becoming a staff member? Did you think "oooh, it would be great to join the staff team" or was it completely out of the blue?

More specifically for Ross, but any of you lot {Tongue Out} can answer it:

Is the forum service at the stage you envisaged when the service began? Has it grown to a stage you didn't think possible or is it smaller than you had hoped for?

Very cool admin!

Dreggie had told me but now I know from personal experience.

I do my best to not talk to anyone if I've had far too little sleep. I know that I'd end up saying something stupid {Lips Sealed}

1. Well, when I first joined I just posted for the sake of getting the board some activity; I thought it would be cool to be an active member with a service from the very beginning. I started coding for VF a lot, simply because the way the service is setup is so much easier to work with than what I'd been used to. I did a lot of code support, too; simply because there just weren't (and unfortunately still aren't) many coders around.

I had a feeling that I might become staff, but it wasn't really something I was aiming for; I was just tired of the attitudes of people at other providers, and wanted to be a part of something new.

2. When I first joined, there wasn't much here in terms of activity or members. However, I looked through the features and whatnot, and immediately knew that this would be a great service; provided Ross could get it off the ground. This place has had solid growth from the beginning, and is for sure considered a rival to other providers.

The only thing that I had thought would be bigger by now was the amount of coders; but it's understandable, since VF has so many awesome features built-in that there's really no need for hundreds of coders. {Tongue Out}

There's Dreggie and I, Ross of course, and I've seen that Dwight and a few others have taken to learning Javascript. {Smile}

I'm close to learning JS {Smile} It's still some what confusing, but I will eventually get it.

For Marc, Have you ever gotten a virus that had the potential to brake your computer?
(I'm keeping my self fully loaded with AV programs. I got COMODO FireWall and AV. Replaced McAfee FireWall/AV)

Personally, I have never gotten a virus. Currently I have no AV or Firewall software installed (other than Windows' default), and I've been virus-free for as long as I've had my own computer(s). {Smile}

iv never had anti virus, at best i keep Zone Alarm as firewall because its light and there are naughty pings from severs in this country ^^

My current job is working for Sainsbury's (UK supermarket). Been there for 6 years {Sad} I've got a few unpaid 'jobs' - some freelance web design work, some odd bits for a local recoard label...and this place, which keeps me busy!

Ideally i'd like to do something web based - i'm trying to set up a freelance design business with a friend but recent events have meant that is on the back burner. I'm open to most suggestions {Smile}

My ideal job would be:

1. DJing/Producing Records/Working for a major Record Label
2. Running my own food outlet/music retail outlet

My current job status is a bit complicated {Tongue Out} I am in a co-op program at the University of Waterloo. You may want to read here if interested: http://www.cs.uwaterloo.ca/prospect/cooporregular.shtml

Basically I alternate between 4 months of full-time studying, and 4 months of full-time working. No summers off. *sigh*

So I have already finished one work term from last May-August as a Software Tester at Kinaxis. I just finished my 3rd study term, and in January I will be starting my second work term, returning to the same company but as Application Developer.

My dream job would be to have my own software company and manage it, but if that doesn't work, just a decent job in that field would be good {Smile}
