Why? - Posted By Graham (amusedtodeath) on 9th Dec 07 at 6:51pm
This was something i was thinking about last night.

Ross, what was it that made you create Virtual forums? Was it the just the challenge of making forum software, or was it as a viable business enterprise?

Anyone else, feel free to post up Questions, as long as Ross doesn't mind fielding them {Tongue Out}

I did it as a challenge and with the intention of being able to learn from such a large project. I never considered it as a business enterprise. However this project did really pay off for me. When I went for a job interview as a web developer they saw the forum project in my portfolio and really wanted to learn more about it. I think they were quite impressed with what I had built from scratch. It was after that point that I thought of finishing and releasing it as a service.

Sounds exciting! {Smile} It'll be interesting to see it grow and expand over time {Smile}

You can make money also with Ad-free. I am thinking of making a forum hosting.Though i don't know how many decades it will take. {Cry}

Cool {Cool} Hope VF gets to be like PB with over 100 thousand members and 1 million posts ^_^. That will take years to come, as it did for PB.

Yes that will take a long time.

Yeah it'll take a while, but I'm sure it'll happen quick if Ross is doing the great job he's doing now.

That and if we all keep advertising. {Wink}

Yes, it will take a while. Unless we form a mob from Proboards and come here... {Shocked}

I don't think it will take as long as PB. PB started when forum software was still in it's fairly early stages. VF is coming into the field with numerous big-time forum providers, which would normally make it harder, but since Ross is well known at one of the largest forum providers (ProBoards), people will be compelled to use his service. {Smile}

Unless everybody from PB comes here then they'll still be bigger {Tongue Out} Besides, most PBers already have an established forum service which they're happy with which does not make them the ideal potential market {Tongue Out}

As I said in a pm to Ross, the force is strong with V Forums

Re: Why? - Posted By BizzD (0wnzer) on 10th Dec 07 at 4:53pm
Most of us are from PB (if not all).We all migrated here like birds. {Confused}

Re: Why? - Posted By Tyson (fithad) on 10th Dec 07 at 4:54pm
I'm staying with VF since the skinning system is nicer.

Established forums may be weary to migrate, but if new forums are being made, people will be mroe compelled to join here if they see it's gaining popularity and it's easier to use. {Smile}

Gotta agree there - there's a useability factor that is a lot easier than other forum providers. Plus some of the more "daring" people will go with the new service rather than a tried and tested provider. Once all the bugs are eradicated, a good staff system is set up for this place then the service will really take off, i feel {Smile}

I think it's already got a nice start. {Smile} But yes, once all the bugs are sorted out, I'm sure VF will get many more sign-ups. {Smile}
