Coding "College" - Posted By Marc (cr0w) on 22nd Dec 07 at 11:58pm
I thought I'd post this in general, since it's intended more for those who are interested in coding but know little about it.

I've been thinking about possibly getting together a group of coders to do a summer coding "college" type thing.

The intention of this will be to give one-on-one aid to learning coders who just can't seem to learn well from tutorials and other non-personal learning techniques [books, videos, etc.]

What I plan on doing is have someone pay a "tuition" fee [not sure what it will be yet], and that covers them for the two months of summer, and winter break.

Users can attend online "classes", which will be run by me and other coders who are interested in this. We will setup a video/chat room, where the "teacher" runs screen capture software to show what they are doing, while talking over microphone.

If "students" have questions, they need simply type their question in the chat, and the "teacher" will respond. Students can also arrange for 3 one-on-one learning sessions per week if needed.

Also, all classes will be available for streaming by students for six months. [July 1 - December 31]

Some languages that will be taught include: html, xhtml, javascript, xml, php, css, and more.

Since this is still just in the planning stages, I would like to get a feel for how much interest could be gathered from this project; so all I need to know for now is would you be interested in this?

Re: Coding "College" - Posted By infestor1 (infestor1) on 23rd Dec 07 at 5:37am
hmmm.... sounds good. I got a chat room software that i haven't used yet. it costs $5 but i already have it. {Smile} we could make a few changes to the code to do videos...

Re: Coding "College" - Posted By CåñåÐå™ (canada) on 23rd Dec 07 at 12:46pm
Yes i would be, very much . {Smile}

Re: Coding "College" - Posted By BizzD (0wnzer) on 23rd Dec 07 at 4:38pm
That would be an awsome idea! Though i really stink at coding so i couldn't help.

I have a question: Would it be a website or just a chatroom?

Re: Coding "College" - Posted By Marc (cr0w) on 23rd Dec 07 at 5:31pm
It would be a full website, most likely on a Private Server. {Smile}

@infestor1: I appreciate the thought, but I've already finished coding the chatroom portion of it. Now I'm just talking to my host about eventually integrating the screen capture software into my server/site. {Wink}

Good luck Cr0w.i am sure it will be a big sucess. {Grin}

Is there a way i can help without knowing how to code Really well because if there is i would do it.

Erm...become a student? {Smile}

That's all i can think of for now, but if anything opens up, I'll let you know. {Smile}

Re: Coding "College" - Posted By Graham (amusedtodeath) on 23rd Dec 07 at 10:13pm
It sounds like en excellent idea! If it does come to fruition then i'll definitely consider being a student {Smile}

I just want to see how much interest I can gather, then I'll put up a poll regarding tuition costs. {Smile}

Re: Coding "College" - Posted By Michael (wrighty) on 24th Dec 07 at 2:36am
I'm happy to help teach dude! {Smile}

Re: Coding "College" - Posted By Nick (nickb) on 24th Dec 07 at 3:28am
Wow sounds cool, I only know basics, I just built a website not to long ago, I posted it as "My Website" It has frames, Tables, images, etc. Though I need a Complete design, Its just "ok" But I want it Better then what it is. Go check it out.

Re: Coding "College" - Posted By Samus (samus) on 26th Dec 07 at 4:49pm
Seems like a good idea. Would be helpful to, like you said, people who find it hard to pick it up from tutorials and like. Much like me, 6 months ago. {Tongue Out}

Re: Coding "College" - Posted By Marc (cr0w) on 26th Dec 07 at 5:29pm
One thing I plan on adding is a free preview type thing for potential students. It will give them an opportunity to browse member features, and will show a few example recordings of classes. {Smile}

Re: Coding "College" - Posted By tricky.cb (crazyblue) on 3rd Jan 08 at 6:10am
As long as it doesn't cost too much I'm in. I learned a bit of javascript once before but I've forgotten it. I've always wanted to be able to back my designs up with codes. It will come in handy with web design and what not.

So.. just how much will it cost?

Probably not too much; $20 at the most. {Smile}

Re: Coding "College" - Posted By XeroCint (kai) on 3rd Jan 08 at 12:50pm
Hm, I would suggest lowering the price, maybe even doing it for free at first, that way people will be able to recommend the college, and possibly even a price. I would definitely be interested though. {Cheesy}

Re: Coding "College" - Posted By Michael (wrighty) on 3rd Jan 08 at 12:51pm
You can' offer 'training' for free. If that was the case people wouldn't bother trying to teach...

Re: Coding "College" - Posted By XeroCint (kai) on 3rd Jan 08 at 12:55pm
Hehe, Wrighty... Maybe if I learn Javascript well enough I can teach {Cheesy}

var Kai = javascript.Level1
if Kai = javascript.Level5++
{
prompt("ahmigad I can teach!");
}
else
{
prompt ("epic fail!");
}

how was that ?

Re: Coding "College" - Posted By Michael (wrighty) on 3rd Jan 08 at 12:58pm
prompt? O.o

alert {Wink} {Tongue Out}

Re: Coding "College" - Posted By XeroCint (kai) on 3rd Jan 08 at 12:59pm

maybe prompt is C.. lol I was learning C way back when, but compilers apparently don't work on my computer.. like the outcome pops up in Command Prompt but only for a second.. Annoying

Re: Coding "College" - Posted By Michael (wrighty) on 3rd Jan 08 at 1:00pm
prompt does exist, it's just not what I think you meant! {Smile}

I know in JS it asks for input, no?

Yup! {Smile}

teeheehee... you should teach me more o.O

Re: Coding "College" - Posted By Michael (wrighty) on 3rd Jan 08 at 1:10pm
No... pay for the college when it's out! {Tongue Out}

I think it's quite reasonable - you'd pay a lot more for a lesson at a college, or even some books. It equates to about £10 for us peeps in the UK, which i think is excellent value.

Re: Coding "College" - Posted By tricky.cb (crazyblue) on 3rd Jan 08 at 4:06pm
$20 is good, would we be able to pay by PayPal? Thats the easiest way to do it.

o,o not when your mom thinks the world is out to scam itself

Re: Coding "College" - Posted By tricky.cb (crazyblue) on 3rd Jan 08 at 4:25pm
My mother will understand completely. I'll tell her its good for learning web design and I could put it towards my life later on, and also there are classes in high school that do coding/web design and its always better to have a head start then go in not knowing anything. She'll hand me her credit card and I'll be learning to code {Cheesy}

"What if its a scam!?"
"But Mom, I know them..."
"OMG WHAT IF THEY MOLESTED YOU?! WHAT. IF. THEY MOLESTED YOU?!"
"Wouldn't I notice if I had been molested...?"
"OMG THEY BRAINWASHED YOU!!"

I'm old enough to control my own money. I earn it, i spend it {Cool}

Re: Coding "College" - Posted By tricky.cb (crazyblue) on 3rd Jan 08 at 4:30pm
I can get my mother to give me her credit card for anything. I simply tell her I'll pay her the money back and she agrees to almost no matter what it is.

So can I, I just can't spend credit card money. I actually have 60ish right now, but I am buying an R4DS

Re: Coding "College" - Posted By tricky.cb (crazyblue) on 3rd Jan 08 at 4:35pm
I currently have no money! I'm saving for a Tablet. It costs about $80 too. I just bought Guitar Hero 3 for $90.. My birthday is next month =/

Re: Coding "College" - Posted By Graham (amusedtodeath) on 3rd Jan 08 at 4:38pm
A tablet is on my shopping list too. If i've got enough money from overtime during Christmas i might be able to afford one.

*struggles to get back on topic*

Yes, paypal will most probably be the method of pay! {Cheesy} (I would have thought!)

Re: Coding "College" - Posted By XeroCint (kai) on 3rd Jan 08 at 4:53pm
lol is there really any other way?

Re: Coding "College" - Posted By Michael (wrighty) on 3rd Jan 08 at 4:55pm
Bank Transfer ... and other online payment methods 'storm pay' is one I think.

Re: Coding "College" - Posted By Graham (amusedtodeath) on 3rd Jan 08 at 4:57pm
Cheque, if someone doesn't have paypal. Would take ages to get over by post but that's an option.

So eloquently put.

Re: Coding "College" - Posted By tricky.cb (crazyblue) on 3rd Jan 08 at 5:04pm
PayPal is just too easy. You type in your account and password then you have moneyzzz.

( I've gotten 3 topics locked so far! {Shocked} )

bah, team work if anything

would we get degrees and have a little online graduation and everything?

Re: Coding "College" - Posted By tricky.cb (crazyblue) on 3rd Jan 08 at 5:07pm
I want a certificate that says something special on it so I can print it out and take it to a bar or something and when they say I have to be 21 I'll show them certificate that says I graduated Coding College.

Re: Coding "College" - Posted By Michael (wrighty) on 3rd Jan 08 at 5:07pm
I don't know how it will work..

but I'm guessing there would be tests etc... It'll be ran professionally though for sure!

Re: Coding "College" - Posted By Marc (cr0w) on 3rd Jan 08 at 8:37pm
Payment options will most likely be PayPal, Google Checkout, Interac Online, Cheque/Money Order, and Wire Transfer. {Smile}

And yes, there will be some form of exams [not sure how it'll be controlled to not allow cheating, though. {Unsure} ], and I'll get a sexy certificate made which will be mailed to each "student". {Smile}

What would all the staff be. Teachers and...something else.

Re: Coding "College" - Posted By Michael (wrighty) on 4th Jan 08 at 3:09am
Teachers mainly I would have thought... there'd be some administrative people too I think (though Cr0w would probably handle that [or I could {Cheesy} ])

I'll be taking care of most of the administrative stuff [money, specifically. {Tongue Out} ], as well as teaching a few classes.

There will be a forum for the site, but the teachers will probably take care of moderating that. {Wink}
