How to Set Up Money! - Posted By ashkir (ashkir) on 25th Jul 08 at 10:18pm
Lots of people asked about this. Lots more are going to. So here's a guide to this amazing feature and the reason why we don't have a money code. :].

An amazing feature on Virtual Forums is the feature to set up a 'money/currency' system without the use of a JavaScript code. This guide will show you how to set up a currency and can offer insight on how some features work. Thanks to a brilliant feature called Additional Profile Options. The graphic below should explain where to find it. :].

Image

This can be found in the Administration Panel (http://YOURBOARD.vforums.co.uk/action/admin) in the second column on the first row of options. You should see something like:

Image

Now I will guide you step by step through setting up your own currency. :].

Step One: Setting the name of your currency.

The first field we shall fill in is this one:

Image

Now, in this example I am going to use 'Gold'. :]. Now I will fill it in, my currency on my message board shall be 'Gold'. (Note: Adding a colon to the name is not needed, as VF automatically adds it for you.)

Image

That's all for that step!

Step Two: Default Currency/Default Value. Do you want to give your members a flat small amount of money? I feel like I do! Here's the default value part:

Image

Each new member with zero posts I think should have, 5 gold for free! So I will fill the default value out to '5' which by default, anyone with 0 posts and no modification will have 5 Gold!

Image

That's all for that step!

Step Three: Editable By! We can set what we want this field to be editable by in profiles.

Image

We have three options to choose from:

Image

'Members' means any member that can modify the profile can edit this field.

'Members (Once)' means a member can only edit this field ONCE. Staff can edit it again.

'Staff' means only staff members with the power to edit a profile can edit this field. If we're setting up a currency I believe it's best to let only staff to edit it. :]

Image

That's all for that step!

Step Four: It's time to add a description. :].

Image

Adding a description isn't exactly required but it is a very good idea! So when you edit the Additional Profile Options in the future you will know what this field is about (if you ever need to modify anything) also it allows you to have a description where we'll have the currency editable in our member's profiles!

So let's fill it in:

Image

That's all for that step!

Step Five: This step is easy. Min-Length...let's skip it! This is the minimum amount of characters this option can have when a user edits their profile. Since we are setting up a currency it is unneeded.

Image

That's all for that step!

Step Six: This step is all about increments. An increment with Additional Profile Options is for numbers only. Each most counts as one increment. This feature will add that many 'points/value' to the already existing value.

Image

So if we want each post to give out three gold we will set the value as three. Also note, this only counts if the post counts! If you have post counts turned off in a certain board this doesn't apply to those posts. :].

Image

That's all for that step!

Step Seven: Numeric Values. This is to tell the board if this new profile option will be numeric. Yes means this profile option can only be numbers, which allows the increments in Step Six to become true. No means this option cannot be numbers.

Image

So let's turn this to yes since we are setting up a currency. :].

Image

That's all for that step!

Step Eight: Max-Length. This feature is actually more handy then Min-Length when setting up a currency. Want to max out the amount of gold somebody can have? Values:

1 = Max of 9 Gold.
2 = Max of 99 Gold.
3 = Max of 999 Gold.
4 = Max of 9999 Gold.
5 = Max of 99999 Gold.

But I don't want to set a max number. You can if you want.

No max number:

Image

Leave it blank. :]. Want the max to be 99999 gold? Set the value to '5'

Image
.

That's all for that step!

Step Nine: The Delete Option feature. If you ever want to remove this feature you can use the delete button to remove this Additional Profile Field.

Image

That's all for that step!

Step Ten: Press the Save Button! We want to save our new currency, right?

Image

That's all for that step!

Editing the Profile: Here's what it looks like when editing a profile! :]

Image

Mini-Profile: Here's a screenshot with only one post, hence 5 + 3 = 8. :]

Image

Member Bio: The 5 + 3 = 8 (8 gold) can be found on the member's profile too! Here's another screenshot. :]

You can set up more then one currency as well such as Gold, Silver and Copper. There are honestly no limitations! Play around with these amazing features to master them!
