I'm sure many of you will have noticed that your vForum may not have been running as fast recently as it used to. I blame the 30,000 registered users across the 6,000 forums we are now hosting
We have sourced and are intending to move all forums to a brand new server. Which (based on testing so far) should be more than capable of handling whatever you throw at it We're talking about something with 3x the RAM of the current server and 6x the storage space!
The plan for implementing this is as follows:
- This support forum will be moved over first. It will be the first real forum to run on there so we can check that it is all working. If everything goes according to plan, that should be later this week. This support forum may be offline during the transfer ✔
- Once I am happy the platform is working on there, all forums will be mass transferred. There will be no downtime for standard forums during this transfer (they may just run a little slower than normal). ✔ New forum signups will be disabled during this time.
- After all forums are transferred the rest of the smaller services & files will be transferred along with the main vForums websites. Once this is completed new forum signups will be re-enabled.
I'm looking forward to it, I hope you are too
- Ross
Update: Tomorrow (Tuesday 25th January) at around 1:30 GMT we will transfer all forums using the vforums.us domain name as their primary address. There should be no downtime during this procedure.
Update: Today (Monday 28th February) the DNS changes for the main vforums.co.uk domain have been made. 99% of forums using this domain have already had their databases transferred to the new server. The rest will be completed shortly.
Sounds good! I have noticed somewhat of a lag, was kinda figuring it was me, but I guess not!
Nice work
Yay!
What are the specs?
Awesome . hopefully all the downtime / lagging comes to a stop
Yay!
What are the specs?
90GB HDD, 1GB RAM, 1TB Bandwidth
CPU is a Dual Quad Core Xeon
Yay!

After the hours & pain setting it up, I'd rather not

Haha, I suppose that makes sense.
*Slips Ross a cookie as a bribe*
A couple of teething problems (mainly due to DNS fail, although that was mainly the fault of the person changing the records - me ) but this support forum is now running on the new server
Could take a few hours for everyones DNS to update.

I'm guessing that's the reason for most of the images on VFS not appearing, haha. Hopefully everything's back to normal by the morning.
New servers. ^_^ Yay.
I keep getting this error on the forums: An unknown error has occurred. Please contact our support forum (Log ID: 1295080009)
Thanking you. Issue fixed
I had issue's with iDirectory Support forum not wanting to load, and the API being down just for iDirectory. iHosting in this case, was working 100% though. iD is working fine now, and there are no issues.

This support forum is the only one to be moved so far.

Oh ok, then it must have been something else then messing it up then, I noticed it when this support was offline.

Have just finished the transfer for everyone who use a vforums URL ending in "vforums.us"
Took a lot longer than expected and hit a few issues along the way. But hopefully that means the rest will be a lot smoother.
Will announce the date for moving the rest when I have it
Looks like everything will finish getting moved over this week. There's less than 500 forum databases still to be transferred. On the down side, some of these are the larger forums which I was leaving to last
Will post more updates when we're ready to disable new signups and make the DNS changes
New host has a great increase in speed , thanks and keep up the good work!
Last forums are now being processed & transferred to the new server. DNS changes have been submitted and should take affect within the next few hours.
Let us know of any problems you come across (not that there should be any )
Update: All forum databases have transferred. Tomorrow we will begin the process of moving over the remaining parts of the website & other infrastructure.
Image upload system has switched over to the new server.
